UP NEXT IN FALCON SOFTBALL
• BGSU vs. Central Michigan • May 3-4 • Bowling Green, Ohio •
• The BGSU softball team is in the thick of the Mid-American Conference Tournament chase as the final week of the regular season begins. Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons, currently sitting in fourth place in the conference, wrap up the home portion of the schedule with a midweek series against Central Michigan. The teams are slated to play a single game on Tuesday (May 3) followed by a Wednesday (May 4) doubleheader. Tuesday's game begins at 3:00 p.m., with Wednesday's action slated to start at 1:00 p.m. at Meserve Field.
• Live stats will be available for all three games, along with an audio stream courtesy BG Falcon Media.
• The Falcons are 27-15 overall and 13-9 in MAC play, good for fourth place in the 11-team league. BG took two of three games at Ball State over the weekend to move past the Cardinals (13-10 MAC). The Falcons are one game behind third-place Ohio (14-8 MAC) and a game-and-a-half behind second-place CMU (15-8 MAC). The top-four teams will qualify for next week's MAC Tournament, which will be hosted by the regular-season champion.
THE MAC TOURNAMENT RACE
School W-L Pct. Remaining Opponents (all are three-game series)
1. Miami 20-3 .870 vs. Ball State; at Central Michigan
2. Central Mich. 15-8 .652 at Bowling Green; vs. Miami
3. Ohio 14-8 .636 at Toledo; vs. Western Michigan
4. Bowling Green 13-9 .591 vs. Central Michigan; at Kent State
5. Ball State 13-10 .565 at Miami; vs. Akron
6. Akron 12-14 .462 at Ball State
• BGSU has won each of the last two MAC series, against Akron and BSU. In each case, the Falcons entered the series directly behind their opponent in the standings, but leapfrogged that opponent by taking two of three games.
• The Falcons captured a pair of 2-1 decisions in Muncie over the weekend. The series opener saw Sarah Gonzalez single home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning. In the final series game, Reagan Williamson reached base in all four plate appearances and drove in both BG runs. Payton Gottshall picked up both wins in the circle, and had an ERA of just 0.88 on the weekend.
• It was another momentous weekend for Gottshall. The six-time MAC Pitcher of the Week broke her own single-season record for strikeouts, and also surpassed her previous career-best win total.
• Central Michigan is 24-21 on the season, and the Chippewas are 15-8 in the MAC, good for second place. CMU has won seven of the last nine games. Three players are hitting over .350, including Michaleigh Vallimont (.366), Abbey Tolmie (.353) and Shannon Stein (.352). Stein has 16 homers, tying the school's single-season record, and CMU's team total of 47 is just one away from matching that program record. In the circle, Grace Lehto and Kaitlyn Bean have combined to start 42 of CMU's 45 games. Lehto is 14-10 with a 3.14 ERA, while Bean has a 7-9 mark and a 3.95 ERA.
• BGSU trails Central Michigan, 78-26, in the all-time series. The teams split a four-game series at Meserve Field last season on the opening weekend of MAC play (March 19-21, 2021).
• Following the CMU series, the Falcons end the regular-season schedule with a three-game set at Kent State, as the teams will play a Saturday (May 7) doubleheader and a Sunday (May 8) single game.
• Then, the top-four teams in the league will head to the MAC Tournament (May 12-14), which will be hosted by the regular-season champion.
