Fenton-Bockbrader, Falcons Announce 2023 Schedule
January 02, 2023 | Softball
Bowling Green State University softball coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons have announced the team's 2023 schedule. BGSU is slated to participate in four tournaments to begin the season, and the Falcons are scheduled to play a three-game series against each of the other 10 Mid-American Conference softball-sponsoring schools.
For the second-straight season, the Falcons will head to Rosemont, Ill., to begin the year at the DePaul Dome Tournament. BGSU won four of five games inside the dome in the opening weekend of the 2022 campaign. This season, BG's opponents at that tourney will include Detroit Mercy, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky, Valparaiso and Western Illinois (Feb. 10-12).
The following weekend (Feb. 17-19), the Orange and Brown will venture to Gainesville, Fla., for four games at the University of Florida Tournament. The Falcons will play two games vs. Connecticut as well as one each vs. Delaware State and the host school.
The February portion of the schedule ends with a five-game weekend at the UE Softball Invitational II. BGSU will open that weekend's action against Purdue Fort Wayne, then will meet St. Thomas and the host school, Evansville, twice each.
BGSU's final 2023 tourney will be the Jane B. Moore Memorial Tournament in Auburn, Ala. (March 3-5), where the Falcons are slated to play two games against Tennessee Tech, two vs. Auburn and one against South Alabama.
The Falcons will head to Ann Arbor for a single game against Michigan on Wednesday, March 15, before beginning the MAC portion of the schedule two days later. BGSUÂ is scheduled to host Ohio (March 24-25), Western Michigan (March 28-29), Miami (April 11-12), Ball State (April 21-12) and Kent State (April 29-30).
BG's road series in conference play include trips to Toledo (March 17-18), Buffalo (April 1-2), Akron (April 15-16), Central Michigan (April 25-26) and Northern Illinois (May 5-6).
In addition to the Michigan game, the Falcons are also slated to face Detroit Mercy (April 5) in non-conference action in the Motor City.
The MAC Tournament, hosted by the regular-season champion, will begin on May 11.
The Falcons finished the 2022 season with a 34-21 (.618) overall record and a 16-11 (.593) MAC ledger, good for fourth place in the 11-team league. BGSU's total of 34 victories was the program's highest in a decade, and the Falcons' overall and league-only winning percentages also were the best since 2012.
The Falcons qualified for the 2022 MAC Tournament and advanced all the way to the championship game. Then, BG participated in national postseason play, heading to Fort Collins, Colo., and winning two games in the National Invitational Softball Championship. Those wins, over Stephen F. Austin and George Washington, were the first national postseason victories in BGSU softball history.
In the classroom, a school-record 13 Falcons were named to the Academic All-MAC Team, while 15 team members were named Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes for the 2021-22 academic year.
