October 01, 2023 | Women's Soccer
Czerwien nets the winner midway through first half
ATHENS, Ohio – Lexi Czerwien's first career goal gave the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team the lead midway through the first half, as the Falcons picked up a 2-0 win over Ohio University on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 1). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Chessa Field.
The win, combined with other results around the league on Sunday, moved the Falcons (5-4-1, 3-0-1 MAC) into first place.
Brynn Gardner doubled the BGSU lead early in the second half, scoring after a nifty pass by freshman Emma Stransky, and the Falcons' defense did the rest. BG allowed the Bobcats (4-2-5, 2-2-0 MAC) just two shots on goal during the 90 minutes.
Lili Berg and Madison Vukas combined on the shutout in goal. The clean sheet was the Falcons' fourth in as many MAC matches and the fifth of the season.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• Since the start of the 2017 season, the Falcons are now 26-6-2 on the road against MAC opponents. BGSU is 23-3-1 in league road contests since the beginning of 2018, having outscored the opponents, 71-15.
• BGSU is 20-2-1 in the last 23 conference road matches, dating to late in that 2018 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons had the majority of the possession in the game's first 10 minutes, with the ball in Ohio's defensive end for much of that time. BG's first shot of the match came on a turnaround shot by Emma Stransky from the top of the box, but that shot was hit directly at Ohio goalkeeper Celeste Sloma in the 11th minute.
• With 20 minutes gone, a BGSU giveaway near midfield led to a counterattack for the Bobcats. Shae Robertson's shot, however, was blocked by Katie Cox.
• Just over a minute later, the Falcons were on the board. Maya Dean hit a low cross into the center of the box, where a host of players converged. An Ohio defender blocked the ball near the six-yard line, and the ball caromed toward the penalty spot. Lexi Czerwien was first to reach it, and had plenty of time to pick her spot as she put it past Sloma to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
• BGSU had several dangerous chances within a minute of one another, as Dean hit a low shot that forced Sloma into a diving stop. Sloma tipped that ball wide of the left goalpost, and after the ensuing corner kick, a blast by Brynn Gardner forced Sloma to leap and tip the ball over the crossbar.
• The Bobcats had the ball in BGSU's defensive end over the final few minutes of the opening half, with arguably the home side's best chance of the half coming in the final minute of play. Lili Berg came off of her line to grab a cross, but a BG defender headed the ball and it went past Berg. But, with 25 seconds left in the half, Taylor Green knocked the ball away from Ohio's Maia Kaufman as she prepared to shoot.
• Early in the second half, Isabelle Gilmore took a free kick and played a gorgeous ball into the penalty area. The ball was just out of reach of Czerwien, however, and Christie Fransen made a lunging effort to get a foot on it at the far post, but the ball went just wide of the net.
• The Falcons doubled the lead in the 55th minute. Stransky took a pass near the top of the 18 and went to the ground as she attempted to settle it. But, while on the ground and with several Bobcats surrounding her, Stransky slid a pass to Brynn Gardner who was moving toward the right side of the box. Gardner put a low shot back across, and the ball nestled into the left side of the net.
• For the final 35-plus minutes, Ohio had stretches of possession, but the Falcons did not allow any serious scoring chances by the hosts, as BGSU efficiently and effectively protected the two-goal lead.
• With just over one minute to go, Lizzie Boltynck stole an Ohio goal kick and fired a shot that just missed finding the left side of the net.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• Ohio had a 10-7 advantage in total shot attempts, but BGSU put five shots on goal, compared to just two for the Bobcats.
• Lexi Czerwien scored the first goal of her collegiate career on Sunday, and it proved to be the first game-winning goal of her career as well.
• Lili Berg and Madison Vukas combined for the shutout in goal for the fourth-straight match and the fifth time this season. Berg was not called upon to make a save, while Vukas had one stop in the Falcons' win.
• Brynn Gardner's goal was her team-leading third of the season and the ninth of her career. The sophomore now has 25 career points.
• Freshman Emma Stransky made the first start of her collegiate career. A total of 17 Falcons have started at least one match this season to date.
• Stransky picked up the assist on Gardner's goal, giving her two assists and six points this year to date. Stransky and Gardner are tied for the team lead in points.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will return to the road, taking on Miami University on Thursday evening (Oct. 5). First touch is set for 7:00 p.m.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will be back home next Sunday (Oct. 8), taking on Eastern Michigan University in a 1:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Stadium.
