Falcons Show Fight Through Four Sets In Athens

ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team traveled to Athens, Ohio to face the Ohio Bobcats for the first of two matches on Friday (Oct. 13). The Falcons sent the second and third sets to extra points, winning the third set to force a fourth for the match. However, it was the Bobcats that came out on top with a 3-1 final.
The Falcons saw three players reach double-digit kills with Kat Mandly's 17 leading the way. Lauryn Hovey followed closely with 15 and Mia Tyler landed 12. Jaden Walz set up the attack, recording 41 of BGSU's 51 assists over the course of the match.

How It Happened
Set 1: Ohio 25, Bowling Green 16
- Ohio landed the first two points of the match, but the Falcons responded with a 5-0 run to move in front, including winning a challenge to overturn the third point of the run.
- Ohio soon responded with a 3-0 run of their own, tying the set up with the score at 6-6. This started a run of ties, coming at 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9 before OU pushed ahead 11-9.
- The pair of points to break the tie started a 6-2 run for the Bobcats that took the score to 15-11 for the media timeout.
- Ohio continued to extend their lead out of the media timeout before closing out the set with a 3-0 run to take the set.
Set 2: Ohio 28, Bowling Green 26
- Ohio jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set, but the Falcons responded with a 3-0 run to tie it up at 5-5.
- The Falcons were able to tally back-to-back points to move in front 8-7 and prompt a timeout from the Bobcat bench.
- Bowling Green soon registered a 3-0 run to add to their advantage, stretching it to 12-8.
- The Falcons continued to maintain their lead, adding a point to the separation, with an 18-13 lead to force the second Ohio timeout of the set.
- Ohio worked to close the gap, utilizing a 3-0 run to bring the score to 20-19 BGSU with the Falcons taking a timeout.
- BGSU responded with a pair of points out of the timeout to push their lead back to 22-19, but the Bobcats chipped away to tie it at 24-24, forcing a BGSU timeout with the set going to extra points.
- The two teams traded points before Ohio took the set 28-26.
Set 3: Bowling Green 30, Ohio 28
- Ohio began the third set with an early 3-0 run to move in front 5-2, similar to the second set.
- Bowling Green answered with a 3-0 run of their own later in the set to move in front 9-8.
- The two teams traded points, going back-and-forth, leading to the media timeout with the Falcons leading 15-14.
- Out of the timeout, BGSU landed two of the next three points to force a timeout from OU with the score at 17-15.
- Ohio was able to put together a 3-0 run to tie the set at 20-20, setting up a Bowling Green timeout to pause the action.
- The two teams continued going back-and-forth before a pair of BGSU points put the Falcons in front 22-21 with an OU timeout.
- The set went into extra points with the trading of points continuing. BGSU took a timeout trailing 27-26 late in the set.
- Bowling Green was able to go on a 3-0 run to close out the set and send the match to a fourth set.
Set 4: Ohio 25, Bowling Green 19
- The fourth set saw separation with a 3-0 Ohio run to move the score to 8-4 and bring about a Bowling Green timeout.
- The Falcons tallied a 3-0 run of their own soon after to close the gap to 10-9. BGSU continued to chip away, tying the set at 15-15.
- Ohio pushed back in front with a 20-17 lead to force the second Bowling Green timeout of the set.
- The Bobcats were able to maintain their advantage to take the set and the match.

- Jaden Walz tallied 41 of BGSU's 51 assists over the course of the match and added eight digs, missing a double-double by just two. The 41 assists for Walz marks the second time this season she's registered 40+ assists in a match, previously having 43 against Northern Illinois in five sets.
- Kat Mandly landed a team-leading and season-high 17 kills for the Falcons while attempting a team-high 41 attacks. Mandly also logged 20 points for Bowling Green, a new season-high for her and just 0.5 off of her career-high.
- Mia Tyler recorded a team-best .357 hitting percentage, landing 12 kills for the Orange and Brown. Tyler added three digs to her stat line, a new season-high.
