Dean's Record-Setting Goal Sets the Tone as Falcons Roll
October 19, 2023 | Women's Soccer
Falcons explode for a season-high five goals in win over CMU
With the win, the Falcons moved into second place in the MAC standings. BGSU is just one point behind first-place Western Michigan with two matches to go.
Additionally, BGSU has clinched a berth in the MAC Tournament. Six of the 12 teams will qualify for the league tourney (scroll down for Thursday's results and updated MAC standings).
Dean and Lacee Bethea each had two goals vs. CMU, while freshman Audrey Oliver scored her first collegiate goal in the victory. Dean scored her two goals – both assisted by Emilie Gardner – within the first 13-plus minutes of the match.
Dean's first goal set a new school record for earliest goal at the start of a match.
Leading by a 2-0 score at the half, the Falcons (8-5-2, 6-1-2 MAC) then got back-to-back goals by Bethea just 3:14 apart, before Oliver gave the Orange and Brown a 5-0 lead in the 78th minute.
Jaelyn Dobrowloski helped the Chippewas (2-6-6, 1-5-3 MAC) avoid the shutout, getting her team on the board with just under 10 minutes to go.
BGSU's goal total was a season best, and marked the highest output by the Falcons in just under 12 months, since a 7-1 victory at Eastern Michigan on Oct. 23, 2022.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Maya Dean, as mentioned, scored the fastest goal in school history, finding the back of the net with just 13 seconds gone on Thursday. She broke Corbie Yee's record, as Yee scored 19 seconds into a match at Xavier on Sept. 21, 2008.
BONUS NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Lacee Bethea added her name to a school list as well, as her two goals came just 3:14 apart. That ranks her ninth on the list of fastest two goals by the same player in school history.
YET ANOTHER NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons scored the most goals at Cochrane Stadium in over two years, since a 6-0 win vs. Oakland on Aug. 29, 2021.
• That Oakland match marked the last time that at least two Falcons scored two goals each in the same game. It has happened just five times in school history, but Thursday marked the first time it had ever happened in a MAC contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons had been shut out in back-to-back games for the first time in a calendar year, but it took BG just 13 seconds to get on the scoreboard on Thursday night.
• Shortly after the opening kickoff, Emilie Gardner played a long ball forward from the BGSU half of the field. As the ball bounced in the CMU end of the park, Chippewa goalkeeper Allison LaPoint came off of her line toward the ball. Maya Dean, however, got to the ball first, and chipped it over LaPoint's head and into the vacated net.
• With nearly eight minutes gone, Dean's pass put Ellie Pool into the box. Pool hit a hard shot, but LaPoint made a nice save to keep the margin at one goal for the time being.
• But, the Falcons doubled the lead at the 13:20 mark. After Katie Cox was fouled, Emilie Gardner played the ensuing free kick into the box. Dean got her head on the ball as her flick-on found the frame. LaPoint was able to tip the shot off of the crossbar, but Dean was first to reach the ball and knocked it into the net from close range.
• Midway through the half, CMU's Megan Scholten hit a hard shot from distance. Madison Vukas made an acrobatic stop for the Falcons, leaping to tip the shot over the crossbar.
• With 10 minutes remaining in the period, Lizzie Bultynck stole the ball deep in the CMU end. Her shot was stopped by LaPoint, and a quick follow-up try by Emma Stransky was blocked before Central cleared the ball out of danger.
• The final minute of the half saw Bultynck beat down on LaPoint on another scoring chance, but the CMU 'keeper was able to make a kick save.
• Early in the second half, a cross by Lacee Bethea was just out of reach of Dean, who was bidding for a hat trick. Two minutes later, Dean's through ball found Brynn Gardner, but LaPoint made the save on the sophomore's shot.
• Lili Berg made a nice stop on a hard shot by Jaelyn Dobrowolski in the 55th minute of the match.
• The Falcons made it a 3-0 game in the 62nd minute. Brynn Gardner had the ball near the end line on the right side, and played a low ball into the six-yard box. Pool got a touch on the cross, and Bethea then blasted it into the upper half of the net.
• Just over three minutes later, Bethea and BG were on board again. Berg made a save on Claudia Muessig, then punted the ball away. The ball sailed over midfield, where Bultynck and a CMU defender vied for it. A header sent the ball to Bethea, who popped it over LaPoint and into the net to make it a four-goal game.
• In the 78th minute, Pool passed the ball to Audrey Oliver near midfield, and Oliver's quick pass freed Lexi White down the left side of the field. White took the ball into the penalty area and slid a return pass to Oliver, who blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the goal. LaPoint had no chance on the play, and the Falcons had a five-goal lead.
• CMU got on the board in the 81st minute. Muessig brought the ball into the box on the left side and hit a hard shot. Berg went to the ground to make the save, but Dobrowolski was there to put the rebound into the net.
