Senior defender earns her second honor in as many days
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Bowling Green State University women's soccer standout Emilie Gardner has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday morning (Oct. 24).
This marks the second national honor in as many days for Gardner, who was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday (Oct. 23).
Gardner, a native of Whitehouse, Ohio (Anthony Wayne), made key contributions at both ends of the pitch as the Falcons went 2-0 last week. The senior defender played all 180 minutes as the Falcons defeated Central Michigan by a 5-1 score on Thursday night (Oct. 19) and Ball State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 22).
On Thursday, Gardner had assists on BGSU's first two goals – with the first goal coming just 13 seconds into the match – as the Falcons built a five-goal lead en route to a 5-1 win over CMU. The assists were the first and second of her Falcon career, and she also had her first career shot on goal.
Then, on Sunday, she had an assist on the game winning goal at BSU, which was scored by her sister, Brynn Gardner, with just 28 seconds left in the match. Gardner's long free kick started that scoring sequence, only two minutes after she had put a long free kick on frame, forcing the BSU goalkeeper to tip that shot over the crossbar at the very last second.
Emilie Gardner has started 15 of BGSU's 16 matches this fall, missing one contest due to injury, and leads the team in minutes played (1,211).
The Falcons, now 9-5-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the Mid-American Conference, sit in second place in the conference standings, just one point behind league-leading Western Michigan. BGSU ends the regular-season schedule with a Thursday (Oct. 26) match vs. Northern Illinois. First touch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free.
BG has clinched no worse than a second-place finish in the MAC regular-season race, and the Falcons have earned a quarterfinal-round bye. BGSU will play a semifinal-round match on Thursday, Nov. 2, with opponent, start time and site to be determined.
