THE FALCONS AND THE MAC TOURNAMENT
• BGSU enters the Ohio contest with an all-time record of 21-7-8 in MAC Tournament play. The Falcons' .694 winning percentage is the highest among all MAC schools, and BG's total of 21 MAC Tournament victories ranks second in the conference (Miami has 22).
• The 2023 season marks the first time the Falcons have ever been the number-two seed for the MAC Tournament. BGSU has been the number-one seed six times, including in five-straight seasons from 2017-21, and the Falcons have been the third seed once (last year) and the fourth seed on four occasions. BG was the sixth seed once, the seventh seed once and the eighth seed twice.
• Entering the 2023 tourney, BGSU has advanced to the MAC Tournament final a league-record 10 times. This season marks the 15th time overall – and the seventh-straight year – the Falcons have advanced to at least the semifinal round.
• BGSU qualified for the MAC Tournament just twice during the first five years of the program, before making the tourney in seven-straight seasons from 2002-08. The Falcons advanced to at least the semifinal round in six of those seven years.
• In 2004, the Falcons – seeded eighth – won the first MAC Tournament crown in program history. Each of BGSU's other five MAC Tournament titles came when the Falcons were a number-one seed.
• After making the MAC Tournament in seven-straight seasons (including the 2005 season when BG repeated as tourney champs), the Falcons then went eight years in a row (2009-16) without qualifying. The Falcons returned to the league tournament in 2017, advancing all the way to the final, then captured the tourney crown in 2018, 2019, 2020(-21) and 2021.
• BGSU is 13-1-4 at home, 5-3-1 on the road and 3-3-3 in neutral-site matches in the MAC Tournament. The Falcons are 11-1-1 in the quarterfinal round, 7-3-3 in the semifinals and 3-3-4 in championship-match appearances.
• Eight of BGSU's MAC Tournament matches have required penalty kicks, and the Falcons advanced past the opponent in six of those eight matches, meaning that BG has survived and advanced in 27 of 36 league tourney contests over the years.
THE FALCONS VS. OHIO IN THE MAC TOURNAMENT
• BGSU enters Thursday's match with a record of 1-0-0 vs. Ohio in the MAC Tournament. The only previous meeting came in the semifinal round of the 2008 tourney, when top-seeded BG picked up a 1-0 victory over the fourth-seeded Bobcats at Cochrane Stadium.
THE OPPONENT
• Ohio is 7-7-5 on the year, and the Bobcats went 4-4-3 in MAC play. Ohio finished the regular season in a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference, earning the sixth seed for the league tournament before going to Muncie and posting a 2-0 win over Ball State in Sunday's (Oct. 29) quarterfinal round. Individually, Shae Robertson and Izzi Boyd have combined to score 13 of the team's 20 goals this season. Robertson has team-best totals of eight goals and 16 points, while Boyd's 11 points include five goals. Both Robertson and Boyd scored in the win at BSU. Celeste Sloma has played every second of all 19 matches in goal, and has 76 saves, seven shutouts and a GAA of just 0.89. Head coach Aaron Rodgers and the Bobcats went 10-7-2 overall and 6-4-1 in the MAC in 2022.
THE SERIES
• BGSU trails Ohio, 12-11-6, in the all-time series, but BGSU is undefeated in the last 10 series matches, having gone 8-0-2 since a 4-2 Ohio win in October of 2015. In this year's regular-season meeting, Lexi Czerwien and Brynn Gardner scored as the Falcons picked up a 2-0 win in Athens. BGSU is 8-5-3 at home and 3-7-3 on the road against Ohio through the years. Thursday will be the teams' first-ever meeting at a neutral site.
UP NEXT
• The BGSU-Ohio survivor will advance to the MAC Tournament's championship match and will face either fourth-seeded Kent State or top-seeded Western Michigan. The final will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 5) at the WMU Soccer Complex.
