BGVB To Recognize Seniors Following Saturday's Match
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will close out the rest of the 2023 regular season within the comforts of the Stroh Center, playing two matches against Buffalo before a midweek against Miami (OH). The Falcons and Bulls will play on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 10-11) with both matches set for 6 p.m. starts.
The Falcons head into the final stretch of the regular season well within the hunt for the MAC Tournament, fighting for a spot in the postseason. The Orange and Brown have won seven of their last eight with the lone loss coming in five sets. Of the seven wins BGSU has tallied since Oct. 14, six have come via three-set sweep for Bowling Green, accounting for their last six wins.
At The Matches
The Falcons will be recognizing heroes on Friday (Nov. 10) as part of Heroes Night and Veterans Day on Saturday. The weekend will conclude on Saturday (Nov. 11) with Senior Night for BGSU, recognizing the Falcon seniors after the match.
Battling The Bulls Of Buffalo
The Buffalo Bulls will enter the weekend leading the East Division of the Mid-American Conference, and second overall, with a 12-3 MAC record to go along with a 22-5 season standing. Buffalo has won six of their last seven with the lone loss coming to Western Michigan in four sets. The other two MAC losses for Buffalo have come in five sets to Toledo and three sets against Ohio, their only home loss of the season. The only other losses on the entire season for Buffalo have come in three sets against then-No. 16 Arkansas and five sets against Xavier.
Scouting Buffalo
Entering the weekend, Buffalo has registered the best hitting percentage in the MAC with a mark of .275 on the season. The Bulls are also second in both kills per set (13.89) and aces per set (1.89). The attack for Buffalo is set by Mandy Leigh, averaging 10.59 assists per set, ranking second in the MAC and 18th in the nation while collecting eight MAC East Setter of the Week awards.
All-Time Against The Bulls
In the all-time series between Bowling Green and Buffalo, the Falcons hold the advantage with a record of 39-10. When hosting the Bulls, BGSU is 21-4 over 25 matches. In the series, the Orange and Brown have won eight straight, including nine of the last 10. The last win for Buffalo in Bowling Green came in five sets during the 2018 season with their last win overall being a four-set match in 2019. The two teams faced three times last season, including in the MAC Tournament.
Efficient Attack Leading The Falcons
Against Akron, the Falcons continued a strong stretch on the attack. Over the last seven matches, BGSU has registered a hitting percentage of .330 or better five times. Over those seven matches, Bowling Green is averaging a hitting percentage of .338. On the season, the Falcons are 12-3 when they record a better hitting percentage than their opponent, including a record of 5-2 when hitting at least .300.
Defense Playing Key Role
While the attack has been key for the Falcons recently, defense at the net has been just as important. On the season, Bowling Green holds a record of 12-2 when holding their opponent to a hitting percentage below .200 while being 2-10 when letting their opponent hit above that mark. Of the two wins when allowing a team to hit above .200, one came in the last BGSU win over Akron with the Zips hitting .223. The other came against Northern Kentucky in the opening weekend at .215.
Letting It Rain In November
November has been a strong month for the Falcons in recent history. After starting the month off with back-to-back wins, Bowling Green has now won nine straight matches in the month of November after going 7-0 last season during the month. Going back to the 2019 season, the Orange and Brown are 20-5 in November. The 2020-21 COVID season didn't play in the month due to a January-April schedule.
MAC Tournament Outlook
With three matches left in the regular season, the Falcons are currently in a tie for the last spot in the MAC Tournament with Central Michigan. For the MAC Tournament, tiebreakers among two teams are decided by head-to-head winning percentage. Like Bowling Green, CMU closes out the season with three home matches, hosting Ohio this weekend and Eastern Michigan on Wednesday (Nov. 15).
