Bulls Top Falcons, 8-4, in Series Opener
April 01, 2023 | Softball
Saturday's second game halted due to weather, will resume Sunday prior to the teams' regularly-scheduled game
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Wynnie Reid and Maycee Godbolt each drove in a pair of runs, but the Bowling Green State University softball team fell, 8-4, to the University at Buffalo on Saturday (April 1) at the Medaille Sports Complex.
The second game of Saturday's scheduled Mid-American Conference doubleheader was called after two innings due to inclement weather. The game will be resumed on Sunday (April 2), with game three of the series to follow.
The Bulls (8-19, 2-1 MAC) scored a first-inning run, before a two-out, two-run single off the bat of Reid gave the Falcons (8-22, 1-9 MAC) the lead in the top of the second.Â
But, UB retook the lead on Sara Kelly's two-run homer in the third. Madison Fernimen led off the Buffalo fifth with a round-tripper to give the hosts a 4-2 advantage, before the game was halted due to weather.
When it resumed at approximately 4:15 p.m. ET, the Bulls added four more runs to cap a five-run inning. Godbolt got two of those runs back with a homer in the sixth, but BG could draw no closer.
BGSU-UB GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Bulls got a first-inning run when Alexis Lucyshyn walked with one out and, after a fielder's choice, a Madison Fernimen double plated Lily Lauck.
• But, BGSU struck back against UB starter Lucyshyn in the top of the second. Maycee Godbolt led off with a base hit, and a Makailah Dees bunt single put two runners aboard. Katie Hutter's sac bunt moved the runners up 60 feet apiece, before Wynnie Reid came through with a two-out single that scored both pinch-runner Delaney Davis and Dees.
• BGSU starter Hannah Davies escaped a second-inning jam after the Bulls loaded the bases with just one out. Shortstop Reid ranged into the outfield to catch a fly ball off the bat of Lucyshyn, then fired home to cut down Kate Vara attempting to tag and score.
• But, in the third inning, Lauck's leadoff walk was followed by a one-out Sara Kelly homer to give UB a 3-2 lead. Mackenzie Krafcik entered the circle, and after allowing a one-out single, proceeded to set down the next five hitters.
• Fernimen led off the Buffalo fifth with a homer before a long weather delay ensued. When play resumed, UB scored four more times in the fifth to break the game open.
• The sixth frame saw the Falcons creep closer, as Reagan Williamson drew a walk before Godbolt homered. But, following that homer, Lucyshyn did not allow another baserunner as she set down the next six Falcons.
• UB had an 11-6 advantage in hits, with Fernimen, Kelly, Mia Mitchell and Avelyn Van Heyst picking up two apiece.
• For the Falcons, Godbolt went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Reid also drove in two runs.
• Lucyshyn picked up the win, allowing four runs and six hits in her complete-game effort. She walked one batter and struck out 12.
• Davis allowed three runs and four hits before leading with one out in the third, while Krafcik allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings of relief work.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons and Bulls will resume the second game of Saturday's scheduled doubleheader on Sunday (April 2) at 12:00 p.m. That game was scoreless after two innings.
• Then, approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of that contest, the teams will play Sunday's regularly-scheduled game.
