Turning The Page To A New Season
Bowling Green is coming off a 2022 season that resulted in the team's second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three seasons. The Falcons posted a 22-10 record, including a 15-3 standing within the Mid-American Conference. Prior to the NCAA Tournament, BGSU tallied eight straight wins to close the regular season and capture the MAC Tournament title.
Going Against ETSU
The season opener for the Falcons against East Tennessee State University will mark the first meeting between BGSU and ETSU in volleyball. The Buccaneers will be the 234th unique regular season opponent during the history of BGSU volleyball, dating back to 1976.
East Tennessee State is coming off a strong season that resulted in a 21-8 record for the Buccaneers. ETSU had a slow start in 2022, falling in their first five matches, but quickly bounced back, winning 21 of their next 23 matches. They closed out the regular season with nine straight conference wins, posting a 15-1 record within the Southern Conference and went 10-1 when playing at home.
Opposing Ohio State
The Falcons will face Ohio State, renewing one of the longest series in program history, dating back to 1977 which was just the second season for the Orange and Brown. BGSU is seeking their first win in program history over the Buckeyes in the all-time series. This will mark the first meeting between BGSU and OSU since 2019, playing each other in a neutral site match then as well. The Falcons have come close a few times against Ohio State, falling in five sets three times during the history of the series.
The Buckeyes enter the 2023 season ranked No. 14 in the nation in the latest AVCA rankings. A season ago, OSU advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, falling to the eventual National Champion, Texas, 3-1. Ohio State will be led by senior Emily Landot who led the team in kills in 2022, landing 463, while being second in digs (311). OSU lost their stat leaders in both assists and digs from 2022.
Facing Off With Northern Kentucky
Bowling Green and Northern Kentucky will be meeting for the sixth time in program history and fourth time since 2016. The Orange and Brown will enter the match having won the last three meetings against Northern Kentucky, winning 3-0 in 2016, 3-2 in 2017 and 3-1 last year. The match in 2017 is the only trip to Highland Heights for the Falcons during the series' history.
In the 2022 campaign, Northern Kentucky finished as the runner-up in the Horizon League, falling to Wright State in the conference championship. NKU closed out the regular season by winning 12 of their last 13 matches. The Norse lost their top two hitters, who combined for 646 kills a year ago, but will return their digs leader, Anna Burke, who tallied 520 during the 2022 season.
Hovey Looks To Build On Freshman Season
Lauryn Hovey will head into her sophomore season with the Falcons following a strong showing a season ago. As a freshman, Hovey collected numerous accolades including MAC Freshman of the Year, All-MAC First Team, MAC Tournament MVP and AVCA All-Northeast Region Honorable Mention. On top of the awards, Hovey recorded three triple-doubles, being one of 10 players in the nation with three or more and one of just two freshmen to do so.
Blocking Out The Noise
The Orange and Brown will return a strong presence at the net this season. In 2022, BGSU recorded 275 total blocks as a team and will return 92% of the output to the 2023 roster. Among the returners are middle blockers Jessica Andrews and Alexis Mettille who tallied a combined 35 solo blocks. Andrews added 120 block assists while Mettille registered 101.
