Falcon Insider with Derek van der Merwe: November 26
11/26/2024
Important news happening in and around Bowling Green Athletics compiled by Director of Athletics Derek van der Merwe. This Falcon Insider shares upcoming dates to remember and news to be aware of in regards to Bowling Green State University Athletics.

Dear Falcon Family,
The Bowling Green State University Volleyball program has concluded its 2024 regular season with yet another Mid-American Conference title. This marks the 8th regular season or tournament championship for Head Coach Danijela Tomic during her 13-year tenure as a Falcon. Coach Tomic also earned her third MAC Coach of the Year honor. Lauryn Hovey was named MAC Player of the Year, securing her third All-MAC First Team selection. Additionally, Alexis Mettille and Amanda Otten joined Hovey on the All-MAC First Team, while Jessica Andrews and Mia Tyler earned spots on the All-MAC Second Team.
How else could we start another edition of the “Falcon Insider”?
I am so proud of this team and everything they have achieved this year. Coach Tomic continues to excel in preparing this team to compete at the highest level year after year. However, the real story lies in her role as a mentor and leader, inspiring her student-athletes and engaging our entire community. Great coaches are always great leaders, mentors, and motivators, both on and off the court. Their influence extends far beyond their players, touching the broader community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters who rally behind their programs. Congratulations to Coach Tomic, her staff, and this exceptional team for everything they have accomplished for BGSU. The team now turns its attention to postseason play in the upcoming National Invitational Volleyball Championship tournament.
Next up in the quest for a championship is our football team. This Friday at noon, the Falcons will take on Miami (OH) at the Doyt Perry Stadium. A win will secure a spot in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game at Ford Field on Saturday, December 7. This would be the Falcons’ first appearance in the title game since 2015. Let’s pack the stadium and support our team! Additionally, with a 7-4 record, the Falcons are bowl-eligible for the third consecutive year. Be sure to tune into the ESPN CFP Selection Show on Sunday, December 8, at 12 p.m. Bowl announcements will be released after the 12-game playoff.
One of the most inspiring football stories this season has been tight end Harold Fannin Jr.’s pursuit of the FBS all-time single-season receiving record for a tight end. Fannin is just 58 yards away from surpassing the record of 1,352 yards, set by Texas Tech's Jace Amaro in 2013. With 92 receptions this season, he ranks third all-time for FBS tight ends in single-season catches, needing 20 more to surpass the record of 111 set by Rice's James Casey in 2008. Fannin leads the nation’s tight ends om 20+ receiving categories, including yards (1,295), receptions (92), and touchdowns (9). According to Pro Football Focus, he boasts the highest overall grade (97.0) among all receivers and is No. 1 in pass route grade (97.2). Fannin is a finalist for the John Mackey Award, and a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award (only tight end), further solidifying his remarkable season.
Last weekend, our men’s soccer team concluded their season in an overtime thriller at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship game in Springfield, Missouri. This team had an extraordinary year, defeating two nationally ranked opponents—Western Michigan and Missouri State—and finishing undefeated at home (8-0-1). Head Coach Eric Nichols and his team continue to embody the spirit and fight of our University. I also want to thank the incredible soccer community in Bowling Green and the surrounding region for their unwavering support. Your energy and presence make Cochrane Stadium one of the best environments in college soccer.
This week, we announced the public launch of our fundraising campaign for enhancements to Steller Field. Over the past year, we’ve worked with our baseball advisory team and donors to define the project scope and secure philanthropic gifts. Thanks to these efforts, we’re pursuing a $2.3 million goal to fund a new synthetic turf surface and perimeter fencing, enhancing our team’s ability to train and compete year-round.
In support of this initiative, Board of Trustees member Paul J. Hooker ’75 has generously committed to matching gifts up to $500,000 through January 31, 2025. Paul has been a tremendous advocate for this project, and I deeply appreciate his dedication to inspiring others to contribute. For more information about the campaign, [click here].
On November 2, the Slater Family Ice Arena was officially dedicated and celebrated ahead of our hockey team’s victory over Ferris State. The facility was named in honor of longtime BGSU supporter Scott Slater ’73, who provided a lead gift of more than $2.5 million to renovate the arena. We also recognized Al and Mary Green and their family for their $1 million gift, which resulted in the naming of the new Green, Remeis, and Green Mezzanine. This transformation of the ice arena is a testament to what our community can achieve when we work together. [Click here to learn more].
On November 23, over 175 BGSU student-athletes participated in the Bowling Green Holiday Parade, celebrating the strong community spirit that defines our town. The BGSU Falcon Marching Band and even Santa Claus were highlights of this festive event. It was an honor to walk alongside our teams and coaches as we celebrated everything that makes Bowling Green special.
Our winter sports are now in full swing, and I’m excited to see how these programs perform this season. If you’re in Bowling Green on December 2, join me at the Falcon Club Winter Sports Luncheon at noon at Stone Ridge Country Club as we spotlight men’s and women’s basketball, ice hockey, swim and dive, and gymnastics. As we gather with family and friends for Thanksgiving, I want to express my gratitude to our Falcon Family across the country. Whether you attend games in person, cheer from home, or wear the Orange and Brown with pride, your support means everything. And remember, there’s only one rule: When you see someone in BGSU gear, you better say, “Ay Ziggy!”
Happy Thanksgiving and “Ay Ziggy,”
Derek van der Merwe

- WR Rahkeem Smith had 129 all-purpose yards, including 81 receiving yards, last time out against Ball State. He scored two receiving touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and blocked a punt, all coming in the second half. He was named MAC Co-Offensive POW for his efforts.

VOLLEYBALL
- Bowling Green won their 8th MAC Regular Season title, finishing 16-2 in the MAC and will now host the MAC Tournament for the first time since the 2020-21 COVID season.
- The Falcons wrap up the regular season with a 16-2 MAC record, marking just the third time in program history winning 16 or more matches during an 18-match conference schedule. BGSU won 16 in 2021 and 17 in 1992.
- Going back to the 2022 season, Bowling Green is now 21-2 in the month of November.
- As a team, the Falcons hit .322 in the match against Ohio marking the sixth time in the last eight matches that Bowling Green has hit .320 or better. It's also the first time this year BGSU has hit above .300 in a five-set match.
- Alexis Mettille finished the regular season ranked sixth in the nation for hitting percentage, logging a mark of .439 for the Falcons this season.
- Mettille is on pace to break the program records for career and single season hitting percentage. No Falcon has ever hit above .393, she’s hitting above .440.
- Jessica Andrews tallied a double-double for the Falcons in the MAC Semifinal, logging a career-high 16 kills and 10 blocks to lead the team in both stats. - Lauryn Hovey broke the program’s Rally Scoring Era (2001-Present) record for career aces with 115. She is currently 9th all-time.
- Hovey also eclipsed the 1,000-kill mark for her career, hitting the mark exactly in the final match of the weekend against WMU.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
