Otten Logs Double-Double For Falcons In First Match Of DePaul/UIC Invite

Otten Leads Team In Assists And Digs
CHICAGO, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team began play at the DePaul/UIC Invite on Thursday (Sept. 12), facing UIC on the home court of the Flames. The two teams went back-and-forth through the majority of the first set with UIC edging out a 25-23 set score. UIC jumped out to a lead in the second set, but the Falcons battled back. The effort fell short with a 25-20 set score. In the third set, a late surge pushed UIC in front 25-21 to claim the 3-0 final. The Falcons will move on to face Brown on Friday (Sept. 13) with a 1 p.m. EST start.

How It Happened
Set 1: UIC 25, Bowling Green 23
- Sydnie Hernandez landed the first point of the match for the Falcons with an ace. UIC responded with a point, but Bowling Green put together a 3-0 run to move ahead 4-1 in the match.
- UIC closed the gap to 5-4, but the Falcons tallied another 3-0 run, including two Mia Tyler kills, to push their advantage to 8-4.
- The Flames tallied a 3-0 run of their own to draw within one again, this time at 8-7, before tying it up at 8-8 and taking a lead at 9-8 with the run reaching 5-0.
- BGSU and UIC went back-and-forth from there with ties at 9-9, 10-10, 11-11, 12-12, 13-13, 14-14, 15-15 and 16-16. The Falcons called timeout with UIC leading 17-16.
- Out of the timeout, UIC added another point to their tally for a 3-0 run and 18-16 lead. The Falcons ended the run with an Anna Sitek kill before the teams once began trading points, this time with the Flames keeping a slight edge up until another BGSU timeout, this time with the score at 21-19 UIC.
- The Falcons battled back into the set after the timeout, tying the set up at 22-22 and forcing the first UIC timeout of the match.
- UIC moved in front out of the timeout before BGSU tied it at 23-23, however, UIC tallied two consecutive points to take the first set 25-23.
Set 2: UIC 25, Bowling Green 20
- The second set began in the inverse of the first. UIC began with an ace before a BGSU point followed by a 5-0 UIC run, moving the set score to 6-1 Flames.
- The stretch for UIC reached 6-1 for an 8-2 set score, resulting in a Bowling Green timeout to pause the action.
- The Falcons responded with a point out of the timeout, but a 3-0 run for UIC extended their lead to 11-3. BGSU answered with a 3-1 stretch to chip away at the lead, 12-6.
- Bowling Green continued to work away at the UIC lead, using back-to-back Lauryn Hovey kills and a forced attack error to close it to 14-11 with timeout from UIC.
- The Falcons and Flames resumed going back-and-forth with BGSU drawing within one at 19-18. UIC pushed back ahead with a 3-0 run to a 22-18 lead.
- BGSU challenged late, but UIC stayed in front to claim the second set, 25-20.
Set 3: UIC 25, Bowling Green 21
- In the third set, UIC opened with a 5-0 run with Bowling Green calling an early timeout in the set.
- Coming out of the timeout, the Falcons tallied a 3-0 run to cut into the lead, 5-3, but a 3-0 run for UIC pushed their lead back to 9-4.
- The 3-0 runs continued, this time for Bowling Green, trimming the UIC lead down to 9-7 before another 3-0 run tied it at 10-10, making it a 6-1 stretch for BGSU and a timeout for the Flames.
- UIC answered with a 3-0 run out of the timeout to move back ahead 13-10, but the Falcons battled back with a pair of points for a 13-12 score.
- The Falcons were able to tie up the set at 15-15 before eventually moving in front 17-16 followed by a 17-17 tie and again at 18-18.
- UIC registered back-to-back points to move ahead 20-18, forcing the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- From there, the Flames were able to stay in front for the 25-21 set score.

- Amanda Otten led the Falcons in both assists and digs, posting her first double-double of the season and the second for BGSU. Otten finished with 20 assists and 11 digs, marking her third career double-double. The 11 digs for Otten also matched her career-high.
- Lauryn Hovey topped the stat sheet in kills for BGSU, registering 10 while maintaining a .316 hitting percentage. Hovey finished with 10 kills on 19 attacks with four errors.
- Alexis Mettille was efficient on the attack while tying for the team lead in blocks. Mettille landed five kills on seven attacks (.714) while logging a solo block and three block assists.
