BGSU To Face UIC, Brown, DePaul This Weekend
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will play their final invitational of the regular season this weekend, taking on UIC, Brown and DePaul. The weekend will begin at UIC before transitioning to DePaul for a neutral site match against Brown before taking on the Blue Demons. The Falcons will head into the weekend with a 3-3 standing on the season through the first two invitationals.

First Serve
Focusing On The Flames
The Flames will enter the weekend with a 5-1 record. The only loss for UIC so far this season came in three sets to South Dakota State. However, all of the UIC wins have gone at least four sets with three going four and two doing five. The Flames are led by graduate middle blocker Zahria Woodard. Woodard leads the team in kills, having registered 11 or more in five of their six matches so far, while maintaining a .524 hitting percentage on the year. Woodard also leads the team in blocks with 27.0. Last season, UIC advanced to the MVC Semifinals in the conference tournament.
Battling Brown
The Bears began their season last weekend with a trio of matches, finishing 2-1. Brown fell short in five sets to Providence in their season opener, but bounced back with a 3-0 sweep over host Bryant. Their weekend schedule concluded with a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island. Last season, Brown was the runner-up in the Ivy League, falling to top-seeded Yale in the championship match, 3-1, after topping two-seeded Princeton in the first round by the same score. The Falcons will be Brown's first opponent of the weekend, and of the day, playing twice on Friday.
Details on DePaul
DePaul is currently 5-1, facing Colorado State on Thursday and Brown on Friday before taking on BGSU Saturday. The lone loss for DePaul this season came against San Diego State in four sets. As for wins they have two sweeps, one four-set and two in five sets. Graduate outside hitter Jill Pressly leads the team in kills with 106 as well as aces with eight so far this season, giving her the team's top spot in points as well with 116.0, adding four block assists to her stat line. Last season, DePaul advanced to the second round of the NIVC, topping Southern Illinois in the first round before a loss to Drake.
Sending In The Ace
Last weekend, the Falcons landed a season-high 14 aces in three sets during the win over UMBC. So far this season, BGSU is averaging 2.0 aces per set, ranking third in the MAC and 42nd in the nation. Leading the way for the Falcons has been Lauryn Hovey. Hovey had seven of BGSU's 14 aces against UMBC and currently leads the MAC and is tied for eighth in the nation for aces per set with 0.79. Hovey's hot start at the line has pushed her career total to 100 aces, currently fourth during the program's Rally Scoring Era and just seven away from cracking the Top 10 all-time.
Digging The Defense
Lindsey LaPinta had a career weekend at the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invite. In Saturday's match against No. 22 Dayton, LaPinta registered a career-high 18 digs, leading the team over three sets. She followed it up on Sunday against Wright State with another career-high, finishing with 21 digs in four sets, the first 20-dig match by a Falcon this season. Last season, the Falcons had just two 20-dig matches over the course of the season with Alex Laboy having 23 in a match against Wright State and Benedetta Marcon having 24 against NIU.
First Double-Double
Jordan Newblatt registered the first double-double by a Falcon this season on Sunday against Wright State, finishing with 11 kills and 14 digs. While the double-double is the first of Newblatt's BGSU tenure, she's no stranger to the stat. Playing four seasons at Marist before coming to Bowling Green, Newblatt tallied 37 double-doubles for the Red Foxes, including 11 during the 2023 season alone. Over her collegiate career, Newblatt has 1,041 kills and 919 digs.
Andrews, Mettille Block Party
Jessica Andrews and Alexis Mettille have been leading a strong BGSU block this season at the net, giving both a shot at the program's Rally Scoring list for solo blocks. Alexis Mettille entered the top 10 over the weekend, now with 31 solo blocks in her career, currently 10th during the Rally Scoring Era. Andrews isn't far behind, currently with 29 and chasing Mettille to enter the list. A similar story goes for block assists and total blocks. In block assists, Mettille is currently 10th with 214 with Andrews close behind with 187. Mettille is also four away from moving up to ninth and seven away from eighth. As for total blocks, Mettille is 10th with 245 while Andrews has 216.

- All four teams competing in the invite won at least one match in their conference tournaments in 2023. UIC and DePaul advanced to their conference semifinals while BGSU and Brown both advanced to their championship matches. DePaul also advanced to the second round of the NIVC a season ago.
- Lauryn Hovey enters the weekend inside the Top 10 in the nation for aces per set, tied for eighth with an average of 0.79 aces per set. The mark is also the best in the Mid-American Conference.
- Friday's match between Bowling Green and Brown will mark the first meeting between the two opponents in program history.
- Despite having never played Brown, the Falcons have played their other two opponents recently. BGSU last faced DePaul in 2022 and UIC in 2021.
- Hitting percentage has been an indicator for the Falcons so far this season. BGSU is 3-0 when logging a better percentage than their opponent, but 0-3 when their opponent has the higher mark.
