O'Malley makes three saves in her collegiate debut
HAMILTON, Ohio – A late Miami University goal allowed the RedHawks to share the points with the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 29). The teams battled to a 1-1 draw in Mid-American Conference play at Ross High School.
Lexi Czerwien scored her team-leading third goal of the season for the Falcons (5-3-2, 2-1-1 MAC), in the 56th minute of the match. But, Taylor Hamlett equalized for the RedHawks (5-2-3, 1-1-2 MAC) with just 3:19 remaining.
Freshman Payton O'Malley made three saves in her collegiate debut, while MU goalkeeper Dominique Popa had two stops.
The match was originally scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Miami's home facility, Bobby Kramig Field. But, the field was deemed unplayable, so the contest was moved to Hamilton and began at approximately 2:30 p.m.
NOTES & NUMBERS
• As mentioned, freshman Payton O'Malley saw the first action of her career in Sunday's match. Two other Falcons, freshman Lauren Mahoney and redshirt freshman Kaley Simqu, each made the first starts of their respective collegiate careers.
• O'Malley's first collegiate save came in 33rd minute, on a shot by Miami's Makenna Morrison. She made a pair of saves in the second half as well, on Katie O'Malley in the 53rd minute and Millie Cook in the 86th.
• Lexi Czerwien gave the Falcons the lead at the 55:22 mark. The goal was Czerwien's team-leading third of the campaign.
• But, soon after O'Malley made the save on Cook in the 86th minute, Taylor Hamlett found the equalizer for the 'home' team.
• Miami was credited with advantages of 12-4 in total shot attempts, 4-3 in shots on goal, 3-2 in corner kicks and 13-8 in fouls committed.
• Through Sunday's matches around the conference, BGSU is tied for fourth place in the 12-team MAC, two points behind league-leading Buffalo.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons return to Cochrane Stadium next weekend, hosting Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 5). That match will begin at 1:00 p.m., and admission is free.
