Falcons Fight RedHawks To Final Point In Back-And-Forth Five-Setter

OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team played their fourth five-set match in their last six contests, taking on Miami (OH) Friday night (Oct. 31). Miami took the first set, but the Falcons rallied back in the second set, claiming the set in extra points, 29-27. A similar sequence followed in the third and fourth sets with the fourth set going to BGSU, 27-25. In the fifth, the teams continued to battle back-and-forth, but the RedHawks claimed the set and the match. In total, the match included 39 ties and 15 lead changes over the five sets played. BGSU moves to 13-12 on the season while being 7-6 in the MAC with the second match against Miami set for a 4 p.m. start on Saturday (Nov. 1).

How It Happened
Set 1: Miami (OH) 25, Bowling Green 22
- The match started with a back-and-forth up to a 2-2 score, but back-to-back BGSU points, including an ace from Avery Hobson put the Falcons in front 4-2.
- The two teams continued trading points from there to a 6-4 score, but a 5-0 run by the RedHawks swung the score to Miami with a 9-6 advantage.
- The Falcons worked to close the gap to one, 9-8, with the point-trading resuming up until back-to-back points for Miami made it a 15-12 score at the media timeout.
- Out of the timeout, two BGSU points again narrowed the deficit to one at 15-14, but the RedHawks answered with a 4-1 stretch to move the score to 19-15 with a Bowling Green timeout.
- The Falcons responded out of the timeout with a 3-0 run, pulling back within one, 19-18. Miami ended the run with a kill, beginning another back-and-forth period between the teams up to a 22-21 score.
- Miami tallied consecutive points to stretch their lead to 24-21 in the set, bringing about the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- BGSU registered the first point out of the timeout, but a Miami point ended the set.
Set 2: Bowling Green 29, Miami (OH) 27
- The RedHawks registered the first point of the second set, but back-to-back BGSU points, including another ace from Hobson, made it a 2-1 early lead.
- Miami ended the BGSU run, but two more Falcon tallies followed, including an ace from Sydnie Hernandez for a 4-2 advantage. However, Miami closed the gap to tie it up at 4-4.
- The tie moved to 5-5, but back-to-back kills from Marija Tabak pushed the Falcons back out in front, 7-5. The back-and-forth resumed until consecutive points for Bowling Green increased the lead to 10-7.
- The teams again traded points until back-to-back Miami points closed the gap to one, 11-10. BGSU responded with kills from Jessica Andrews and Kendall Williams to push the lead back to 13-10 with the advantage holding to the media timeout, 15-12.
- A 3-0 run for Miami out of the media timeout tied the score at 15-15 with ties following at each tally up to an 18-18 score. The RedHawks broke the tie to go up 19-18 with a BGSU timeout.
- The Falcons recorded the first two points after the timeout to go up 20-19, but the ties resumed with a Miami point for a 20-20 score. The ties continued before a 22-21 BGSU lead to force a Miami timeout.
- BGSU landed the first point out of the break to extend their lead to two at 23-21 with the score moving to 24-22, forcing the second Miami timeout of the set.
- The RedHawks kept the battle going with back-to-back points to tie it at 24-24 and bring about a Bowling Green timeout.
- The ties carried into extra points, making way for trading advantages before the end of the set. A 3-0 run closed it out in favor of the Falcons to tie the match at a set each.
Set 3: Miami (OH) 25, Bowling Green 18
- Miami began the third set with a pair of points, but the Falcons tied it up, beginning another run of ties. The knotted up tallies stood the test of the set, going to a 6-6 score.
- The RedHawks broke the string of ties with a 3-0 run to move out in front, 9-6. BGSU registered a point, but Miami added two more for a 5-1 stretch and an 11-7 advantage. The score moved to 12-8 RedHawks with a Bowling Green timeout.
- The Falcons brought their response after the stoppage with a 3-1 stretch to close the deficit to 13-11. However, Miami worked for a 4-1 stretch of their own to reclaim their lead at 17-12. The score moved ahead to 18-13 with the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- The teams traded points until a 3-1 BGSU stretch closed the gap down to 21-17 in the set. The RedHawks closed out the set with a 4-1 stretch for a 25-18 score.
Set 4: Bowling Green 27, Miami (OH) 25
- Each team tallied a point to start the fourth set, but a 4-0 run for the RedHawks followed for a 5-1 lead. The Falcons worked for a 4-2 stretch, closing the gap to 7-5 with a timeout from the Miami bench.
- The back-and-forth continued after the timeout with the teams matching each other up to an 11-9 score. Miami worked to create a cushion with a pair of points for a 13-9 tally.
- The Falcons fought back with a 3-0 run, including an Avery Anders ace, to trim the lead back down to one, 13-12, with a Miami timeout.
- The run continued after the timeout for the Falcons, reaching 4-0 to tie the set at 13-13. Miami ended the run, but two more BGSU points, including an ace from Hernandez, made it a 15-14 Bowling Green lead.
- The RedHawks again had a tally to tie at 15-15, but another pair of BGSU points created a 17-15 Bowling Green advantage. Miami again battled back with two of their own for a 17-17 tie.
- The back-and-forth continued from there with ties at 18-18 and 19-19, but a pair of BGSU tallies pushed the Falcons back in front with a 21-19 advantage.
- Miami again responded with a 4-1 stretch to take a 23-22 lead, forcing a Bowling Green timeout. Each team tallied a point out of the break for a 24-23 score and the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- Bowling Green registered two points out of the break, including an ace from Andrews. Miami tallied one, but two more for the Falcons followed to force a fifth set after a 4-1 stretch.
Set 5: Miami (OH) 15, Bowling Green 13
- The set began with a 3-1 stretch for the RedHawks before the teams began trading points up to a 6-4 Miami lead.
- From there, Bowling Green rattled off a 3-0 run, moving in front with a 7-6 lead to force a timeout from the RedHawk bench. BGSU added another point after the timeout for an 8-6 lead as the teams switched sides of the net.
- The back-and-forth continued to a 10-8 score before consecutive points for the RedHawks tied it up at 10-10. The Falcons answered with a 3-0 run to take a 13-10 lead with the second Miami timeout.
- The RedHawks rallied for two points out of the break, closing the gap to 13-12 with a Bowling Green timeout.
- The run for Miami continued through the timeout, tying the score at 13-13 before moving in front 14-13 with the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- Out of the timeout, the RedHawks tallied a point for the 15-13 score.

Falcon Stat Facts
- After having a season-high 79 digs against Toledo on Tuesday (Oct. 28) in three sets, the Falcons upped the total to 80 against Miami, setting a new season-high with 80+ digs for the first time since having 83 against Eastern Michigan on Oct. 10, 2024.
- The Falcons also set new season-highs for kills (72) and assists (68). The 72 kills are the most since that Oct. 10, 2024 match against EMU while the 68 assists are the most since having 65 against Ball State on Oct. 16, 2025.
- Jessica Andrews put together a full stat sheet, landing 14 kills as well as a team-high six blocks, a career-high six digs and an ace. For Andrews, the blocks give her 383 block assists as a Falcon, moving past Stephanie Swiger on the all-time lists, now up to third on the Rally Scoring list and fifth all-time.
- Anna Sitek logged her second double-double of the week and fourth of the season, finishing the match with 22 assists and 10 digs for the Orange and Brown.
- Sydnie Hernandez led the Falcons in digs with 20 while adding nine assists for the second-straight match, just missing a double-double. As for the 20 digs, Hernandez now has five 20-dig matches this season with four coming in the month of October.
- Avery Anders followed Hernandez in the digs column, recording a career-high 14 for the Falcons. Anders added an assist and an ace as well.
- For the first time since returning to the court, Amanda Otten led the team in assists with 33. Otten filled the stat sheet, adding eight digs and two kills.
- Avery Hobson and Edyta Waclawczyk posted nearly identical stat lines while tying for the team lead in kills. Both Hobson and Waclawczyk tallied 19 kills and seven digs. Hobson added two aces and two block assists while Waclawczyk added an assist and an ace.
- Marija Tabak followed on the attack, landing 10 kills while adding six digs, a block and an assist for BGSU.
- Helen Wilford tallied a team-high six block assists for the Orange and Brown while also recording two kills.
- Kendall Williams logged a career-high six kills for the Falcons while also knocking down the team's lone block for the match in addition to four block assists.
