Falcons Outlast Ohio For MAC Quarterfinals Win; Advance to Semifinals Saturday At Stroh

Hovey Logs Career-High .630 Hitting Percentage With 18 Kills In Return
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team recorded a 3-1 win in the MAC Quarterfinals Friday night (Nov. 21) over Ohio inside the Stroh Center. The Falcons started strong on the attack and improved their hitting percentage each set, culminating in a .369 mark for the match, paced by Amanda Otten's 40 assists. Lauryn Hovey led the way with 18 kills on a .630 hitting percentage. Jessica Andrews and Helen Wilford combined for 17 kills from the middle without an error, both hitting north of .600. The win advances Bowling Green to Saturday's Semifinals round against No. 2 Western Michigan, scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve at the Stroh.

How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Ohio 20
- The match began back-and-forth to a 2-2 score, but a 5-0 BGSU run pushed Bowling Green to a 7-2 advantage. The teams traded points again until back-to-back for the Falcons made it 11-5 BGSU with a timeout from OU.
- Ohio tallied two points out of the timeout, but the Falcons answered with a pair of their own. The two traded points from there until a 4-1 burst Bowling Green increased the lead to 19-12 with the second Ohio timeout of the set.
- The Bobcats registered two points after the timeout, but the Falcons quickly answered. The back-and-forth continued with a 4-0 run, cutting the score to 21-18 with a BGSU timeout.
- The teams traded points from there through the end of the set with the Falcons taking a 25-20 score for a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Ohio 16
- The Falcons opened the fourth set with a 4-0 run. The two teams traded points briefly, but another 3-0 BGSU run soon followed for an 8-2 lead and an Ohio timeout after a Lauryn Hovey ace.
- A similar sequence followed the timeout with a 3-0 run pushing the score to 12-3 Falcons, but Ohio fought back with a 4-0 run of their own, trimming the score to 12-7.
- The two went back-and-forth from there with the Falcons adding to their lead periodically, resulting in a 17-9 BGSU advantage with an Ohio timeout.
- BGSU and OU traded points again until a 3-0 Falcon run extended the score to 21-11. The point trading resumed from there and carried through the end of the set for a 25-16 score.
Set 3: Ohio 25, Bowling Green 19
- The third set began back-and-forth with ties deep into the set, occurring at each point up to a 9-9 score. Back-to-back points for BGSU broke the ties, moving into a 4-1 stretch for a 13-10 lead.
- Ohio soon worked for a 4-0 run of their own, moving in front with a 15-14 lead at the media timeout of the set.
- The Falcons tied it up at 15-15, but a 4-1 stretch for Ohio increased their tally to 19-16 with Bowling Green taking a timeout.
- The teams traded points in the set to a 22-18 score with BGSU taking their second timeout. Ohio closed out the set from there, 25-19, to force a fourth set.
Set 4: Bowling Green 25, Ohio 17
- The Falcons utilized an early 3-0 run to build a 4-1 lead in the set. The teams traded points until a 3-0 run for Ohio tied it at 9-9.
- The ties continued until back-to-back BGSU points made it 13-11. The pair rolled into a 4-1 stretch heading into the media timeout with a 15-12 Bowling Green advantage.
- The two teams traded points after the stoppage until back-to-back Ohio points, but the Falcons answered with a pair of their own for a 20-16 score and an Ohio timeout.
- A 4-0 run for the Falcons followed the timeout. Ohio landed a point before a kill from Hovey clinched the set and the match for BGSU.

- As a team, the Falcons hit an impressive .369, giving them a 5-0 record this season when hitting above .300 in a match.
- In her return to the court, Lauryn Hovey paced the Falcons with 18 kills on 27 attacks with just one error for a career-best .630 hitting percentage. Hovey added a team-high three aces while completing her stat line with four digs, two blocks and an assist. Hovey now has 1,474 kills in the Orange and Brown, moving her up to fourth all-time for career kills, passing Carlyn Esslinger (1,462) and Lisa Mika (1,461).
- Amanda Otten set the efficient BGSU attack with 40 assists and just missed a double-double with nine digs. She completed her stat line with four kills. For her career, Otten now has 2,293 assists, moving up to seventh during the Rally Scoring Era and passing Erica Fullenkamp (2,283).
- Jessica Andrews landed 11 kills for the Falcons on 17 error-free attacks for a .647 hitting percentage. She also paced BGSU in blocks with four, landed two aces and added two digs for a complete stat line. Her digs give her 43 on the season, matching her career-high for digs in a season.
- Helen Wilford joined Andrews in the middle, landing six kills on 10 error-free attacks for a .600 hitting percentage. Wilford and Andrews combined for 17 kills on 27 error-free attacks from the middle, totaling a .630 hitting percentage between the two.
- Sydnie Hernandez tied for the team lead in digs with 11 while logging three assists and an ace. Hernandez now has 38 aces this season, placing her in a three-way tie for eighth in the Rally Scoring Era for aces in a single-season.
- Anastasija Bozic tied Hernandez for the team lead in digs with 11 while also landing six kills. She added two blocks and an assist to fill out her stat line.
- Going back to the end of the regular season, the Falcons have now won four straight matches.
