Falcons Set For MAC Semifinals At Stroh Saturday Against Western Michigan

BGSU, WMU Slated For 7 p.m. First Serve Saturday Night At Home
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will continue hosting the Mid-American Conference Volleyball Championships this weekend at the Stroh Center with the semifinals Saturday night (Nov. 22). For the Falcons, Bowling Green will play Saturday night at 7 p.m. against the No. 2-seeded Western Michigan Broncos. BGSU and WMU will be the second match of the day. Depending on the first match, it may begin after 7 p.m., but it will not begin before. It will also be an Orange Wave for Falcon Fans inside the Stroh Center. All matches in the MAC Championships will be available to stream on ESPN+ with radio broadcasts from Falcon Media.

Watching Western
Western Michigan enters the MAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the tournament following a 13-5 MAC record over the course of the season. The Broncos closed out the regular season by splitting a weekend series against the Ohio Bobcats, who went on to be the No. 3 seed in the tournament with a loss to BGSU in the first round. WMU and OU each tallied 3-1 wins in their series split. The loss was one of just two in the final 11 matches for Western Michigan with the other being a four-set match to Toledo on Oct. 31. BGSU was the only team during the 11-match stretch to take them to five sets, doing so twice.
BGSU vs. WMU, All-Time
The Falcons and Broncos have been common foes in the MAC Tournament. This will be the third straight season the teams have met. BGSU and WMU faced in the MAC Championship in 2023 and the MAC Semifinals in 2024. As for the overall series, five of the last six meetings between the two teams has gone to five sets. The lone match during the stretch that didn't was a 3-0 sweep for the Falcons on their home court on Oct. 5, 2024. As for the matches this year, Bowling Green took Western Michigan to five sets on the road, despite the absences of both Amanda Otten and Lauryn Hovey.
Hovey Returns To The Court
Lauryn Hovey returned to the court for the Falcons in the MAC Tournament Quarterfinals against Ohio Friday night (Nov. 21). Despite playing in just two MAC matches during the season, Hovey immediately was back to her usual form. In four sets, she landed a team-leading 18 kills while also maintaining a career-best .630 hitting percentage, having just one error on 27 attacks. Hovey also led the team in aces with three, bringing her career total to 170 aces, holding the Rally Scoring Era record and 20 off the all-time mark.
Efficient On The Attack
In the match against Ohio, Bowling Green put together one of their most efficient attacks of the season. Amanda Otten set the effort with 40 of the team's 47 kills while working for a .369 hitting percentage. Three Falcons hit above .600 in the match with 10+ attacks. From the middle, Jessica Andrews and Helen Wilford combined for 17 kills on 27 error-free attacks for a .630 hitting percentage. This came on top of Hovey's career-best .630 hitting percentage on her own with 18 kills on 27 attacks with just one error. The team's .369 mark was their second-best of the season behind only their record-breaking .392 mark against NIU on Oct. 9.
Falcons In The MAC Tournament
Bowling Green will partake in the MAC Tournament for the ninth consecutive season, a streak that goes back to the 2016 season. During that stretch, the Falcons hold a record of 11-7 in the tournament. Bowling Green also made the MAC Championship match in five straight seasons, spanning from 2019 to 2023. This will also be BGSU's fourth time hosting the MAC Tournament in the last seven years, hosting in 2019, 2020-21 and 2024 in addition to this year.
November Success For BGVB
The month of November has been of high success for the Falcons in recent years. Over the last four seasons, going back to 2022, Bowling Green holds a record of 25-4 in the month of November for an .862 winning percentage. Going back even further to the 2019 season and the record still reflects a 36-9 standing, an .800 winning percentage. As for the MAC Tournament in November since 2019, BGSU is 8-4 (.667).
