BGSU concludes play at the Great Alaska Shootout Saturday night
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team could not overcome a cold shooting start Friday night (Nov. 21), as the Falcons fell to UC Irvine by a 75-50 score. The game, the opening contest of the ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout, took place at the Alaska Airlines Center.
Junior Paige Kohler led the Falcons (1-4) with 18 points, while sophomore Johnea Donahue had 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Donahue paced the Orange and Brown in both assists and steals, and tied classmate Lauren Gerken for the rebounding lead.
Jasmine Fearne scored nine points, tying her career high by hitting three three-point field goals on the night.
For the Anteaters (3-2), Lauryn Madsen had 15 points to pace five players in double digits, while Jada Wynn had a double-double, with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. In addition to boards, Wynn led all players with six assists.
UCI got out to an early 12-1 lead and led by a 15-3 score after 10 minutes, and the Anteaters were never headed.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons got off to a slow start, as the Anteaters scored the game's first six points before Kaia Woods hit a free throw just over four minutes in.
• But, UCI answered with the next six points, as a Jada Wynn defensive rebound and a long pass ahead to Nohealani Stores led to a layup and a 12-1 score.
• The Falcons were unsuccessful on 14 shot attempts to begin the game, before Jaedyn Cook got the Orange and Brown on the board with a layup off of a Jasmine Fearne assist. But, the Falcons trailed by a 17-3 score after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Paige Kohler hit a pair of free throws just over a minute into the period, and Fearne took a pass from Johnea Donahue and knocked down a three-point try to cut the BG deficit to 17-8.
• Hunter Hernandez scored the game's next five points, before Donahue found Kohler for a layup. Donahue then scored four points in a row, with a pair of free throws and a layup that cut the Anteaters' lead to 22-14.
• UCI answered BG's run, however, and a pair of Wynn free throws gave the Anteaters a 17-point lead, 32-15, with 2:37 left before halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Anteaters took a 20-point lead with five-straight points, before Kohler hit a deep three with 8:20 left in the period. Then, BG forced a miss and Kohler made a layup, with Donahue feeding her on the second-straight trip down the floor.
• But, Ameerah Grant answered with a long-distance shot of her own, prompting a BGSU timeout.
• Fearne drained her second three-pointer of the game midway through the period, and after the Anteaters hit a shot at the other end of the court, Taya Ellis put back a teammate's miss. Stores, however, scored the game's next four points to give UCI a 49-28 lead.
• Lauryn Madsen knocked down back-to-back three-pointers as that lead ballooned to 27. But, Fearne hit her third three of the night, and Ky'Aira Miller's steal and layup made it a 55-33 game.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Kohler opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a three-pointer off of a Miller feed, but the Anteaters hit back-to-back triples, including another from Madsen, for a 66-36 lead.
• Donahue hit a driving layup with six and a half minutes to go, then came up with a steal. The ensuing possession ended with a pair of Kohler free throws, and the junior then drove and found Laila Harrison with a nifty pass for a layup. BG forced a miss, and Kaia Woods hit a pair of shots at the stripe to give the Falcons an 8-0 run heading into the game's final media timeout. But, BG could not cut further into the lead.
