Huskies Top Falcons Wednesday Night in DeKalb
November 05, 2025 | Men's Soccer
DeKALB, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team saw the 2025 season come to an end on Wednesday night (Nov. 5). The Falcons fell to Northern Illinois University, 4-0, in Missouri Valley Conference action at the NIU Track & Field and Soccer Complex.
The Huskies (8-4-4, 3-1-3 MVC) got a pair of early goals to take the lead, and although the Falcons (5-8-4, 1-4-2 MVC) had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal in the match, Atahan Arslan made five saves in goal as the hosts kept a clean sheet. NIU also had one 'team save' as a defender blocked a shot off of the goal line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU won a corner kick within the first 25 seconds of the match, and Trace Terry got his head on the ball when that corner was played into the box. Terry's shot was pushed wide of the far post by Huskie goalkeeper Atahan Arslan.
• The Huskies took the lead with just under six minutes gone, when Roman Khela took a pass from Vance Sheffield, cut the ball back to his left as he entered the penalty area, and scored from 12 yards out.
• BGSU won back-to-back corners with eight minutes elapsed, but after the ball pinged around the penalty area after the second, the Huskies were able to clear.
• Northern doubled the lead in the 10th minute, on a counterattack. A cross from the right side went past one NIU player in the center of the field, but Martin Montoya was on the far side of the box, and fired a shot into the upper left corner of the net.
• Seven minutes remained before halftime when Aiden Messinger played a cross from the right side. Terry got his foot on the ball, and the shot was headed toward the lower left corner of the goal before a defender knocked it away at the last second.
• The Huskies added to the lead four and a half minutes after the intermission. After a long BGSU free kick was headed by several players, Nico Angulo got the ball near midfield and made a lengthy run downfield, ultimately firing the ball into the net.
• NIU capped the scoring in the 77th minute, when Montoya played a pass to Sheffield and continued his run. Montoya received a return pass as he entered the box, and converted for the Huskies' final goal.
