Sims, Ramos Score First-Half Goals; Ball Makes Three Stops as BG Posts Second-Straight Shutout
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Sophomores Xavier Sims and Caue Ramos scored less than seven minutes apart in the first half, and the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team went on to a 2-0 win over Oakland University Tuesday night (Oct. 20) in non-conference action at the Oakland Soccer Field
The win was the fifth consecutive victory for the Falcons (6-6-2). BGSU's five-match winning streak is the program's longest in over nine years.
Sims got the Falcons on the board in the 22nd minute. A shot by Ramos had been blocked moments earlier, but the Falcons maintained possession of the ball. Senior Gus Peacock, on the right side of the field, slid a ball forward to freshman Joshua Pedersen.
Pedersen took several touches and hit a cross into the center of the box. Sims ran onto the ball, heading it downward, and his shot bounced off of the ground and into the upper part of the net.
Just under six minutes later, the Falcons doubled the lead. Ramos pounced on an Oakland pass, stealing the ball just outside the 18-yard line. The striker, in all alone, chose his spot and beat OU goalkeeper Quentin Ubaydi for a 2-0 BGSU lead at the 28:31 mark.
Sophomore Tyson McCoy nearly replicated Ramos's feat in the 34th minute, stealing a wayward Oakland pass and firing a shot that rang off of the crossbar.Â
With under two minutes left before halftime, the Grizzlies' Gabe Gjokaj hit a hard shot that seemed ticketed for the upper right corner of the net. But, BGSU goalkeeper Jason Ball made a diving stop, deflecting the ball off of the bar, and a follow-up try by the Grizzlies sailed over the net.
The second half saw the hosts attempt a total of eight shots, but none of those eight were on goal.
For the game, OU had an 18-15 lead in total shot attempts, while BGSU had a 7-3 lead in shots on goal. The Grizzlies had a narrow 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Ball made three saves, all in the first half, while Ubaydi had five stops.
