Falcons turn walks into runs, while Krafcik fires a shutout
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Addie Martin's two-run homer gave the Bowling Green State University softball team an early lead, and those two runs proved to be one more than Mackenzie Krafcik would need, as the Falcons posted an 8-0 win at Charleston Southern University on Saturday (March 7). BGSU won the rubber match of the teams' three-game weekend series at the CSU Softball Complex.
Martin homered in the second inning, as BGSU (12-8) scored in five of the game's final six frames.
Both teams had eight hits, but BGSU batters drew nine walks, and one Falcon was hit by a pitch on Saturday. Six of those 10 baserunners came around to score.
Meanwhile, Krafcik walked only one batter, and that came with two outs in the seventh. That walk ended a stretch of 21 2/3 innings pitched without a free pass for the Falcons.
Krafcik threw her second complete game in as many days, and did not allow an earned run in those 14 innings of work. The senior is now 7-3 on the season.
Taylor Behrendt was 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBI on Saturday, while Addie Martin was 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs and a pair of RBI as well.
Cameron Kaufman also drove in two runs, while Katie Hutter walked three times and Peyton Steffes two.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• As mentioned, Falcon pitching went 21 2/3 innings without allowing a walk. The streak began on Wednesday (March 4), when Alyvia Roth pitched the final two innings of the Coastal Carolina game.
• Then, Mackenzie Krafcik (seven innings) and Madison Wendel (six innings) each threw complete games on Friday vs. CSU, with neither Falcon issuing a free pass.
• As mentioned, Krafcik's lone walk on Saturday came in the final inning with the Falcons leading by eight.

BGSU-CSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Each team had a first-inning hit, as Taylor Behrendt doubled with two outs, and Emma Smith had a two-out single in the bottom of the frame. But, in case case, the next at-bat ended the half inning.
• BGSU took the lead in the second, as Cameron Kaufman reached on an error and advanced to second on an Ashley Chevalier sacrifice bunt. Then, Addie Martin crushed a two-run homer to center, and BG had one more run than Mackenzie Krafcik would need.
• The bottom of the frame saw Harper Schoeneweis lead off with a single through the left side and move to second on a sac bunt. But, Krafcik got a ground ball to short for the second out, before shortstop Kaufman tracked down a popup in shallow center to end the inning.
• The Falcons threatened in the third, as both Hannah Simko and Behrendt singled, but BG could not add to the lead. Krafcik struck out a pair while allowing a harmless single in the bottom of the inning.
• In the fourth, Chevalier led off with a walk, and after a pitching change for the Buccaneers, Martin beat out a bunt for a single. Pinch-runner Delaney Davis advanced to third on the play, and Martin caught a CSU infielder napping and alertly took second.
• One out later, Peyton Steffes drew a walk to load the bases, and Davis tagged and scored on a sacrifice fly by Simko. Katie Hutter would walk as well, but reliever Gianna Deluco got a popup to short for out number three.
• In the home half of the fourth, Schoeneweis singled with one out, and stole second. But, catcher Chevalier threw her out attempting to steal third, which proved to be a key play when Lonenzza Marcacci followed with a single. Krafcik then got Ashton Geit to hit a foul pop that was gloved by first baseman Behrendt.
• The fifth inning saw BGSU use a two-out rally to plate a run. Chevalier was hit by a pitch, and Martin drew a walk. Then, Hanna Massaro lined a ball into left-center for a run-scoring single to extend the margin to four.
• Linley Jones led off with an infield single, and Jordyn Dimond's one-out hit put a pair of runners aboard in the home fifth. But, Krafcik got Charlee Yourman to hit a foul fly to right – with Steffes making a long run followed by an impressive catch – before Smith grounded out to short.
• Hutter drew a one-out walk in the sixth, and pinch-runner Jilliyn Gardner promptly stole second. Behrendt walked, and the runners each moved up 60 feet on Hannah Hunt's sac bunt. Then, Kaufman's single plated both runners, giving BG a 6-0 lead. Initially, Behrendt was ruled out at home, but after a challenge by the Falcons, the call was reversed.
• Carsten Sandvig led off the Bucs' sixth with a double, but the runner was stranded at second as Krafcik retired each of the next three hitters via ground balls.
• In the sixth, Martin, Steffes and Hutter each drew walks, loading the bases with two outs, before Behrendt greeted Kinsey Clopton with a two-run single that gave the Orange and Brown and eight-run lead. In the bottom of the inning, Krafcik bounced back after a two-out walk to get a game-ending strikeout.
