15 Moments In 15 Years Of The Stroh Center: BGSU Buzzer Beaters In The Stroh

This summer, join BGSU Athletics in a look back at the first 15 years inside the Stroh Center. We continue the trek through history with a look back at a few of the last-second heroics that shook the Stroh.

The Stroh Center has been home to countless moments through the venue's history, but few have reached the momentous status of a buzzer beater. The Orange and Brown have had their fair share in the building with the Falcon Faithful erupting loud enough to shake the walls.
Nov. 27, 2023 – Fleming, Velasco Start Chmiel Era With Back-To-Back Final-Second Wins
The Fred Chmiel Era at Bowling Green started off with two exciting contests inside the Stroh Center. Opening the 2023-24 season at home against Cleveland State, the Falcons and Vikings went down to the wire.
Two free throws from CSU with 14.7 seconds left gave the Vikings an 86-82 advantage, but a quick three from Amy Velasco with 11.7 seconds left narrowed the gap. A free throw by Paige Kohler with 1.9 seconds left tied the game, 86-86. Cleveland State called a timeout, but didn't have one remaining, resulting in a technical foul that sent Lexi Fleming to line. Fleming drained two free throws with 1.0 second left before Velasco added another with 0.3 seconds remaining for the 89-86 win to begin the Chmiel Era.
In the second home game of the season, more heroics shined for the Falcons. Hosting Duquesne, a Fleming three with 20.1 seconds remaining pushed the Falcons in front 66-64 advantage. A layup from the Dukes with 8.6 seconds left tied it up again. After possession changed hands a few times, Kohler inbounded the ball to Velasco in the backcourt. Driving through the lane, Velasco tossed up a right-handed floater, catching nothing but net as time expired for the second BGSU win in the final second in as many games.
Feb. 8, 2020 – Capacity Crowd Sends Toledo Packing
Entering the 2019-20 season, the Falcons hadn't defeated Toledo multiple times in the same season since 1999. However, in front of a sold out crowd on Feb. 8, Justin Turner changed the story at the free throw line.
In what turned out to be another historical Battle of I-75, the Falcons and Rockets battled until the final seconds in a game that came down to reviews and free throws. Having trailing for much of the game, Toledo battled back to tie the contest at 81-81 with 49 seconds left. Turner was able to work for a look, but tip-in from Matiss Kulackovskis made a miss count all the same. Initially ruled as being touched in the cylinder, a review went in the Falcons' favor to count Kulackovskis' basket.
The Rockets answered with two at the line to again tie the game with 14 seconds left, 83-83. With Bowling Green not electing to call timeout, the ball rested in Turner's hands for the final possession in a tied game. Turner worked to draw a foul with 1.2 seconds left and drained both free throws. Toledo wasn't able to get a shot off before the final buzzer with Turner batted the ball away as time expired for an 85-83 win.
Feb. 22, 2020 – Justin Turner's Buzzer Beats The Bobcats
In February of 2020, nearly 3,800 fans poured into the Stroh Center for a Saturday afternoon conference showdown between the Bowling Green Falcons and the Ohio Bobcats. The Falcons entered 19-7 and were on the cusp of having back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 1947-48 and 1948-49.
In a tight battle, Ohio jumped ahead late in the game with an and-one for a 61-58 lead with 43 seconds left in regulation. OU opted to foul Turner in a one-and-one situation with Turner sinking both to pull within one, 61-60, with 30 seconds left. A BGSU foul sent the Bobcats to the line with 19 seconds left and a miss on the front end of the one-and-one paved the wave for history.
Turner grabbed the rebound, dribbled into the front court and hit a step-back jumper near the top of the key for a Bowling Green win, not leaving enough time on the clock for an Ohio rebuttal to capture the team's 20th win and keep the Falcons tied atop the MAC standings.
Nov. 17, 2019 – Hempfling's Reverse Layup Reverses Result
Coming off the first win of the Robyn Fralick Era in the home opener, the Falcons welcomed Robert Morris into the Stroh Center. A strong game from the Colonials, the Falcons led during the entire second half for just one second. But it was the only second that mattered.
A pull-up jumper near the foul line from senior Sydney Lambert cut the RMU lead down to 60-59 with 19.6 seconds left in the game. Four straight missed free throws from the Colonials opened the door for the Falcons with Sierra Thompson hauling in a BGSU rebound. An outlet pass to Andrea Cecil moved the ball upcourt before a dish to Morgan McMillen.
A driving layup from McMillen was blocked, but Kadie Hempfling was able to act quickly, snagging the rebound and flipping a layup in with just one second left. Robert Morris attempted an inbound pass, but it was intercepted by McMillen near midcourt as time expired, securing the BGSU victory and keeping the Falcons undefeated at home to begin the Fralick Era.
Nov. 18, 2017 – Dylan Frye Downs Dunk City
Coming off a 28-6 season that resulted in an NCAA Tournament appearance, Florida Golf Coast walked into the Stroh Center on Nov. 18, 2017 for the Bill Frack Challenge with a 10-game road winning streak, the second-longest active streak in the nation, and high expectations. Dylan Frye, however, had other plans.
Over the final minute and change of regulation, Florida Golf Coast worked to erase a six-point Bowling Green lead to tie the game at 80-80 with just six seconds left in the game. Off the inbound, Frye raced up the court, putting the FGCU defenders on their heels, and nearly the floor with a quick cross to the left. Multiple steps behind the arc, he pulled up with 0.9 seconds left in regulation followed by the sound of twine and the eruption of the crowd.
