After 75 scoreless minutes, late barrage leads to DU win Sunday

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Duquesne University exploded for three late goals on Sunday (Aug. 23), downing the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team by a 3-0 final. The non-conference match was held at Rooney Field.

The teams combined for 42 shots in the match, but neither team found the back of the net until over 75 minutes had elapsed. But, the Dukes (1-0-1) scored a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead, before adding a third goal late.

Sam Coss made five saves to pick up the win in goal for Duquesne. For the Falcons (1-1-0), Enzo Gil made three stops.

The teams had combined for 10 shots -- five at each end of the pitch -- before the game was 15 minutes old, and the Falcons and Dukes had an aggregate 23 shots in the opening half. Only three of those 23 shots were on goal, however, and the teams went to the intermission locked in a scoreless draw.

Arguably BG's best first-half chance came after Tyson McCoy pounced on a Duquesne defensive miscue and quickly fired a shot toward the far post, but Coss was able to dive and tip the shot wide.

Ten minutes into the second half, Coss came way out of his net in an attempt to knock the ball away from Lucas Brinkman. Brinkman was able to head the ball past the 'keeper, but a DU defender was able to clear the ball out of the 18-yard box.

The Falcons had an offensive flurry just after the hour mark, as Caue Ramos worked to get the ball into the Dukes' defensive end. Ramos found Luciano Perez-Cernuda on the left side of the box, but the freshman's shot went just wide. Soon after the ensuing goal kick, BG regained possession, but a Brinkman shot was blocked over the line for a corner.

In the 66th minute, McCoy forced Coss to make a nifty save to keep the match scoreless, just several minutes after Gil had made a spectacular diving stop on Ashwin Menon. But, DU would break through at the 75:54 mark.

Jameson Michel scored what would prove to be the winning goal after a rush by Duquesne into the BG end. A low left-side cross was out of reach of the diving Gil, and Michel was able to turn it home for a 1-0 lead.

And, soon after the Dukes would double the advantage. With the Falcons pressing forward after the kickoff that followed the goal, Rasmussen won a challenge near midfield and headed toward the BGSU goal. His shot found the far-side netting to give his team a two-goal lead.

Rasmussen capped the scoring with an unassisted goal after a corner kick. That goal, with 7:55 on the clock, came off of a deflection and was the home team's third goal in a span of 6:11.

The Dukes held advantages of 25-17 in shots, 6-5 in shots on goal and 7-6 in corner kicks.

• The Falcons will return to the road next weekend, taking on IU Indy on Friday evening (Aug. 28). That match will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will host Wake Forest on Monday, Aug. 31, with first touch set for 6:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium. Admission is free to all BGSU home regular-season matches.
