Academic Eligibility
BGSU student-athletes are required to meet all institutional, Mid-American Conference and NCAA eligibility requirements in order to participate in intercollegiate athletics. Eligibility is certified at the conclusion of each academic term. The basic requirements that student-athletes must meet in order to maintain academic eligibility are-
Full-Time Enrollment
In order to be eligible for practice or competition, a student-athlete must be enrolled full-time. This means the student-athlete must carry at least twelve credit hours on his or her schedule. There are some limited exceptions to this rule for student-athletes who are fewer than twelve hours from graduation or have already completed a baccalaureate degree.
Grade-Point Average Requirements
All first semester freshmen must obtain a 1.5 grade-point average or better to remain eligible for intercollegiate athletic competition. By the end of the second semester, student-athletes must achieve a 2.0 GPA or better and maintain that minimum level for each subsequent semester of enrollment.
Credit-Hour Requirements
By the start of the third full-time semester of enrollment, all student-athletes must have earned at least 24 credit hours. For instance, if a first year student-athlete passes 12 hours during the fall and only 6 hours in the spring semester, that student will need to pass 6 hours during the subsequent summer to reach the 24-hour minimum. In addition, student-athletes must pass a minimum of 18 credit hours during the fall and spring semesters of each academic year excluding the summer term. Lastly, each student-athlete must earn at least 6 hours each semester to be eligible for athletic competition during the next term. This 6-hour requirement also provides that a student-athlete who does not pass at least six degree-applicable hours during a particular semester becomes ineligible for postseason competition (i.e., conference championship, NCAA championship, bowl game) that occurs during the vacation period immediately following that particular semester.
Percentage of Degree Requirements:
By the start of the fifth semester of collegiate enrollment, each student-athlete must complete 40 percent of the hours required for graduation in his or her designated degree program. Prior to the start of the seventh semester, the requirement is 60 percent of the degree program and it rises to 80 percent at the start of the ninth semester of collegiate enrollment. During the first two years in attendance, the student-athlete may use earned credit hours count to meet these regulations if the credits count toward any BGSU degree program. At the start of the fifth semester of enrollment, the hours must count towards the student-athlete's designated degree program in order to satisfy the requirement.
