| Future Falcons As a prospective student-athlete, BGSU appreciates and values your interest in the athletics department. The department of athletics is dedicated to helping student-athletes reach their full potential both academically and athletically. This site was created to give prospective student-athletes important information that will help in satisfying the NCAA requirements to participate in Division I athletics. Additionally, there are a number of links that may assist in the process. Please keep in mind that this Web site is not all-inclusive and additional questions can be answered by contacting the athletics compliance office. Who is a Prospect? * Any student who has started classes for the ninth grade; * Any student who has not started ninth grade, but receives any financial assistance or benefits from the University that are not provided to prospective students generally. * An individual remains a prospective student-athlete until one of the following occurs (whichever is earlier): The individuals officially registers and enrolls in a minimum full-time program of studies and attends classes in any term of a four-year collegiate institution’s regular academic year (excluding summer); The individual participates in a regular squad practice or competition at a four-year collegiate institution that occurs before the beginning of any term. Recruiting * Recruiting has occurred whenever a member of Bowling Green State University’s athletics staff or a representative of our programs encourages a prospect to enroll at BGSU and compete in athletics. * A prospective student-athlete is considered “recruited” if he/she or his/her parents are: Telephoned on more than one (1) occasion by an institutional staff member for the purpose of recruitment; Contacted off-campus by an institutional staff member; Provided an official visit to Bowling Green State University; Issued a National Letter of Intent Letters A prospect may receive written correspondence (including e-mail) from the BGSU coaches after September 1 of the prospect’s junior year of high school. Prospects in men’s basketball and men’s ice hockey may receive written correspondence at the conclusion of their sophomore year of high school. Phone Calls There are limitations on the number of phone calls that BGSU staff members can make and restrictions on when those calls can be made. A prospect may telephone an institution at his/her own expense at any time. However, coaches and athletics staff may not return phone calls except within the recruiting periods below: * Before July 1 of an individual’s junior year of high school (see exceptions below) No telephone calls * After July 1 One (1) telephone call per week Football * April 15 – May 31 (prospect’s junior year in high school) One (1) telephone call to a prospect of a prospect’s relatives or legal guardians * June 1 – August 31 No telephone calls * September 1 and after One (1) telephone call per week outside of a contact period * During a contact period, such telephone contact may be made at the institution’s discretion Men’s Basketball * June 15 (sophomore year) – July 21 (junior year) One (1) telephone call per month * August 1 (prior to senior year) Two (2) telephone calls per week to a prospect * Two-Year or Four-Year College Prospects One (1) telephone call per week Women’s Basketball * April (junior year of high school or after the conclusion of the NCAA D-I Women’s Final Four) One (1) telephone call during this month * May (junior year) One (1) telephone call during this month * June 1 – June 20 (junior year) One (1) telephone call * June 21 – June 30 (junior year) One (1) telephone call * July (junior year) Three (3) telephone calls during this month No more than one (1) call per week * August and later One (1) telephone call per week Ice Hockey * June 15 (after sophomore year) – July 21 (after junior year) One (1) telephone call per month * August 1 (senior year) One (1) telephone call per week Recruiting Time Periods Coaches are only permitted to have contact with you at certain times of the year. The four recruiting periods are described below: Contact Period * Bowling Green State University coaching staff members may evaluate (watch) and contact (speak with) prospects at their homes, schools, or other off-campus sites. * Sports other than Football: Coaching staff members may contact a prospect no more than three (3) times at any off-campus site Coaches can have contact only (3) times during the prospect’s senior year * Football: BGSU is limited to six (6) in-person contacts BGSU may not contact a prospect more than once (1) per week BGSU may not visit any one high school more than once per week Evaluation Period * BGSU Coaching staff members may assess the academic qualifications and athletic abilities of a prospect at off-campus locations; * In-person, off-campus recruiting contacts are not permitted during an evaluation period; * A coach may speak with counselors and high school coaches, but may not speak with prospects; * All sports but Division I football and basketball: BGSU is limited to seven (7) recruiting opportunities (contacts and evaluations combined) * No more than three (3) contacts * Football: Staff members are limited to three (3) evaluations during the academic year One (1) time in the fall Two (2) times between April 15 and May 31 One to assess academic qualifications and one to assess athletic abilities * Men’s Basketball: BGSU has seven (7) recruiting opportunities (a combination of contacts and evaluations) per prospect Not more than three (3) of the five opportunities may be contacts Shall not exceed 130 recruiting-person days during the academic year contact and evaluation periods. * Women’s Basketball: BGSU has five (5) recruiting opportunities (a combination of contacts and evaluations) per prospect Not more than three (3) of the five opportunities may be contacts Shall not exceed 100 recruiting-person days during the academic year contact and evaluation periods. Quiet Period Bowling Green State University staff members are permitted to make in-person contacts with prospects only on the University’s campus. Off-campus contacts and evaluations are not permitted during a quiet period. Dead Period During a dead period, it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contact or evaluations on or off the BGSU campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospects. Additionally, a coach may not serve as a speaker at or attend a meeting or banquet at which a prospect is in attendance. It remains permissible for a coach to write or call a prospect during a dead period. Recruiting Period - Men's Basketball In men’s basketball, a recruiting period is a period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations.
