Bowling Green State University Athletics
Academic Development
Goal: To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward academic success and graduation.
Advising
All students at BGSU are assigned to one of our centralized team of Academic and Career Planning Specialists. These specialists assist students from all colleges in pursuing a degree. Specialists help you make informed decisions about course selection, understand university curriculum, build an academic schedule, and connect with academic and career resources to be successful throughout their time at Bowling Green State University and beyond.
If you change majors, you will be assigned to a new Academic and Career Planning Specialist. BGSU Student-Athlete Services requires you to meet with your Academic and Career Planning Specialist at least once a semester to ensure you are on track with your degree projections. You can learn more about BGSU advising here.
Additionally, you will be assigned an athletic academic advisor who you will meet with on a more regular basis. You will discuss items like: progress towards degree, course selection, frequent grade check-ins, study strategies, organizational strategies, and anything else that may relate to balancing academics, personal development and athletics. Check out our staff page to learn more about us!
Study Tables
BGSU Student-Athlete Services focuses on maintaining high academic standards. Study tables is designed to provide student-athletes with a structured environment conducive to learning in order achieve success in the classroom. Student athletes may use their study table time to: organize course materials; plan a calendar of due dates for assignments, projects, and exams; read lecture and text materials; meet with tutors assigned through Student-Athlete Services; work on assignments and other course-related projects; meet with Student-Athlete Services staff for mentoring sessions.Â
Student-athletes are required to attend study hall for a minimum amount of hours per week. Hours are assigned based on class and academic standing and academic coordinator/coach discretion, and can vary per team. Each week, academic coordinators provide reports to coaching staffs summarizing study hall attendance for that week.
To assist each student-athlete in making productive use of his/her available time during the day and in the evening, Student-Athlete Services is open over sixty (60) hours each week. All hours are tracked electronically and students can check-in to study hall in the Student-Athlete Services office located in the Jerome Library.Â
Tutoring Services
Student-Athlete Services works in conjunction with the BGSU Learning Commons to provide tutorial support for student-athletes. Through the use of Learning Commons, student-athletes have access to university subject tutors, drop-in group study sessions, and individual math and writing assistance. A graduate assistant in Student-Athlete Services acts as Tutor Coordinator and liaison between the Learning Commons and Student-Athlete Services to ensure the needs of student-athletes are being met.
