HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sam Seidel led off the game by taking the first pitch of the day into right field for a single. A wild pitch allowed Seidel to take second. Vinny Salvione kept the strong start going with a full-count blast to left field, his first home run of the year to put BGSU on top, 2-0, before the first out was recorded.
- The BGSU defense showed out in the game with Brady Birchmeier beginning multiple double plays with one in the bottom of the first and another in the third.
- In the top of the fifth, Seidel missed a home run by inches, lodging a ground-run double into the top of the outfield wall padding on the fly.
- Moving to the seventh, Carter Mottice laid down a bunt single. Pauly Mancino followed with a high fly ball down the right field line, dropping in play after the fielder lost it in the lights. Mancino was able to reach third for a triple with Mottice scoring for a 3-0 lead.
- In the next at-bat, Seidel improved on his ground-rule double from the fifth by a few feet, launching a two-run home run to right field, continuing his outstanding day at the plate and increasing the BGSU lead to 5-0.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Ty Roder entered from the bullpen with the bases loaded and no outs. He worked out of the jam, striking out the next three batters, all swinging, to exit the inning with the 5-0 lead still intact.
- Kade Arn worked through a similar situation in the eighth. Coming on with two on and one out, Arn needed just a few pitches to work an inning-ending double play for a 5-0 tally entering the ninth.
- The Falcons put together a two-out rally in the final frame. Anthony Mitta got it started with a bloop single to right center. Andrew DiLodovico followed in the same fashion for runners at the corners. A double to the right center warning track from Birchmeier brought both home, extending the BGSU advantage to 7-0.
- Samford tallied an unearned run in the ninth, but the Falcons claimed the 7-1 final score.
