Opening Statement:
Loeffler: Happy Thanksgiving to everyone this week. It's been a while since I've talked to you guys. In regards to the game, I was not happy with our performance after last week. I felt we didn’t put forth our best effort. These last couple of weeks we have been exposed up front and had a hard time blocking and protecting the quarterback and it's really difficult for these last two weeks to move the ball. I thought our players today came with a great attitude and we want to end on an extremely positive note and get to the offseason and fill our holes and get ready for a really good football season.
Â
Q:Â What has to happen against Ohio up front for Matt McDonald to have success?
Loeffler Obviously we got to control the line of scrimmage. These last two weeks we've been exposed to our weaknesses. We’ve, throughout the season, smoke and mirrored some things to give us a chance to protect and to get the ball out and these last two weeks we've been exposed and haven't been able to do much in the run game or in the pass game. We've got to be extremely consistent and somehow be able to run the football to create some type of balance and then protect the passer on third down.
Â
Q: What can expect from Nick Mosley and the running game against Ohio?
Loeffler We have some very good, young running backs. I think with another year of training and hard work I think we'll have one of the better groups in the MAC without a doubt. To make a long story short, they're talented. We've got some guys that we brought in that are really good football players.
Â
Q: How have the defensive shifts worked with players injured?
Loeffler Well, obviously we missed those two starters. Those are really good football players and they bring not only talent, but they also bring leadership. It's been good in terms of we got to watch some other guys play. Some guys have really stepped up and there are some guys that have learned from their mistakes. It's a young football team, right now. We won't be young here soon in a year. There's been some great lessons that a lot of these guys have learned in having to play these last couple of weeks.
Â
Q: What impact has Trent Simms had over the last few weeks?
Loeffler: Trent, last year, I thought was able to gain a lot of experience through the COVID year which helped him immensely and I think he's taken the next step. I think his best football is down the road. I think after another year of development, he's going to be a very good football player. It's been fun to watch him go from where he went last year in the COVID year to now. He has really improved immensely. He's got physical skills, he's tough, he can tackle, and he's got good size. It's been fun to watch him improve.
Â
Q: What can you expect from Ohio this week?
Loeffler: They're a good football team. They’re disciplined. They know how to not beat themselves. I know they started out slow, but they've been playing really good football these last couple of weeks. They’ve really made a jump in terms of performance compared to the beginning of the season. We got to play consistent. We can’t beat ourselves with penalties, and we got to play our best game and give ourselves a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter.
Â
Q: What are some of the things you’re looking for against Ohio to setup the offseason?
Loeffler: Playing super competitive. There was times in the Miami of Ohio game that we played competitively, and there were times that not so much. We want to be able to press play after the game and see 22 hats on our side, playing their hearts out and playing extremely competitive and extremely tough. We're a very inconsistent football team right now. There are times we look very good. There are times that we look like we're a bunch of freshmen and we need to take those next steps with consistency and competitiveness.
