Johnny Caughman joined the BGSU staff as a defensive quality control coach in February 2023 where he works primarily with the defensive line.
In 2023, Caughman worked with a defense that led the nation in takeaways with 28 and was a top 25 total defense in the country.
Caughman came to Bowling Green from Northern Arizona University where he was a defensive graduate assistant in 2021 and then promoted to defensive ends coach in 2022 under defensive coordinator Jerry Partridge. In 2022, he coached brothers Cosmas and Eloi Kwete who finished first in the Big Sky Conference in tackles for loss and third in the conference in sacks, respectfully. As a defensive graduate assistant, Caughman worked primarily with the linebackers. Throughout his time with the Lumberjacks, he recruited Northern California, Las Vegas and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC).
During the 2020-21 season, Caughman served as a defensive assistant/video coordinator at Utah Tech University (formerly Dixie State University) where he was responsible for all film breakdown of opposing offenses and organized the scout team. During the Trailblazers’ Week 1 victory over Tarleton State in the spring of 2021, Caughman filled in as the interim defensive line coach.
In 2019, Caughman was the wide receivers/quarterbacks coach as well as the video coordinator for one of the premier junior college teams in the country in Independence (Kan.) Community College. That season, the Pirates were KJCCC champions, and he moved to quarterback coach with four games remaining in the season in which they averaged 51 points per game in that stretch. Caughman also recruited wide receiver Tank Dell to Independence, who led the team in receiving that year and went onto become a third-round pick by the NFL’s Houston Texans in 2023.
While he was a senior at Sacramento State in 2017, Caughman worked as an undergraduate assistant with the tight ends and special teams under Big Sky Coach of the Year Jody Sears. That season, Caughman helped lead the Hornets to a 7-4 record which was their best record while being a Division I program up to date.
Caughman also coached at his alma mater Rodriguez High School in Fairfield, California during the 2015 and 2016 seasons while a student at Sacramento State, where he was the wide receivers and defensive backs coach.
A native of Fairfield, California, Caughman earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Sacramento State in 2018 and a Master’s degree in educational leadership from NAU in 2022.
