Derek Miller enters his first season as the Director of Football Operations at Bowling Green State University in 2020. He was hired following the 2019 season as the Director of Player Personnel/Recruiting Coordinator but moved into his new role in Aug. of 2020. Now Miller’s second stint at Bowling Green, he rejoins the Falcons after most recently holding the post of Assistant Personnel Director for LSU Football.
Miller previously served on the football staff at Bowling Green State University, Louisiana State University and The University of Southern California assisting with the day-to-day recruiting and personnel operations of the program. His responsibilities included, but were not limited to, facilitating visits to campus by NFL personnel, organizing identification, evaluation, and recruiting efforts of prospective student-athletes, assisting with travel arrangements of the coaching staff for recruiting, managing schedules and day-to-day operations of recruiting assistants, carrying out special assignments for the Head Coach and General Manager, supporting the staff as an offensive analyst working with the running backs, and developing graphics to connect with prospective student-athletes by way of promoting organizational and institutional advantages.
Miller played a key part in organizing three consensus national top-five recruiting classes at LSU and USC. He served in a supporting role for three collegiate running backs who rank among the top five in all-time rushing yards at their respective institutions, including Leonard Fournette (LSU fourth all-time) and Ronald Jones (USC fifth all-time). In addition, he has worked alongside 57 NFL Draft picks.
Miller’s primary duty at BGSU is to coordinate the identification, evaluation, and recruiting process of prospective student-athletes. He is responsible for managing official and unofficial visits, forecasting program needs, coordinating coaches’ travel, organizing walk-on try-outs, carrying out the application and enrollment process of signed student-athletes, leading the recruiting student assistant work-force, advancing graphics and social media efforts within the football program, and finding cost-efficient avenues to add value to the student-athlete experience at Bowling Green.
Miller first joined the Bowling Green football program in 2012 as a student manager while attending Bowling Green State University, majoring in sport management and minoring in psychology. During his time as a manager he worked alongside BGSU Head Coach Dave Clawson. He served in a number of roles, including assisting the coaches in running practices, helping organize the pre-practice efforts of the student staff, cleaning the locker room, practice equipment, and game jerseys, supporting Clawson on gameday, assisting the Director of Player Personnel and Director of Operations with day-to-day responsibilities and special projects.
Miller hails from Bowling Green, Ohio and is engaged to Sarah Plaisted.
