Indya Smith enters her third season on the BGSU softball coaching staff in the 2026-27 academic year.
Smith, a native of Petaluma, Calif., came to Northwest Ohio in August of 2024, after playing two seasons at Coastal Carolina, where her coaches included Michelle Gardner.
In Smith's first season on the BGSU staff, the 2025 Falcons posted an overall record of 16-36 and a Mid-American Conference mark of 7-19. BGSU topped both the overall and MAC win totals for the previous two years combined.
The 2025 team scored 219 runs, the fourth-highest total in program history, and BGSU ranked in the top five in school history in a total of seven offensive categories, including runs per game (4.21, fifth); RBI (198, third); walks (153; fifth); batters hit by pitch (32, third); on-base percentage (.350; fifth) and sacrifice flies (13, tie-third).
Individually, Addie Martin was named to the MAC’s All-Freshman Team. She hit 13 homers, the second-highest single-season total in program history. With 15 stolen bases, Martin became the first player in program history to hit at least 12 homers and steal at least 12 bases in the same season.
Then, in 2026, the Falcons topped the overall win total by four, going 20-29 overall. BGSU set program single-season records in walks (190), times hit by pitch (52) and runs batted in (207). BG had an on-base percentage of .377 and the Falcons stole 94 bases in 2026, with those totals/averages ranking second in school history.
The 2026 season marked the first time in program history that four players have posted double-digit steal totals. And, all four of those Falcons swiped at least 15 bases.
In the circle, the Falcons had a team earned-run average of 3.98 in 2026, more than a run-per-game improvement from the '25 staff's 5.24 mark.
The BG offense scored 4.61 runs per game, the program's highest average in nearly two decades (2007) and the third-highest average in program history. And, BG's total of 226 runs was also the third-highest in school history, and fell just four runs shy of breaking the school record.
Smith, as mentioned, played the 2023 and ‘24 seasons at Coastal Carolina, where her coaches included Michelle Gardner. During those two seasons, the Chanticleers posted at least 30 wins each year and went 70-41 overall.
Smith joined the CCU program after spending the previous three years at Saint Mary’s (Calif.). She started 21 games as a freshman for the Gaels in 2020, then was named to the All-West Coast Conference Team in each of the next two seasons.
Smith hit .330 in 2021, leading the roster in extra-base hits and total bases en route to All-WCC First-Team honors. The following season saw her hit .267, including a .316 batting average in WCC play, as she was named to the all-conference second team.
She transferred to CCU and began the 2023 season with a 16-game on-base streak for the Chanticleers. Smith batted .271 on the season and had 26 runs scored and 27 runs batted in.
In the spring of 2024, Smith started 29 games and was hitting .338 with a .649 slugging percentage – leading the team in both categories – before suffering a season-ending injury in late March. One of the 29 games in which Smith saw action was a win over visiting Bowling Green in February, when she drew two walks and scored a pair of runs.
Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in sports communications from Coastal Carolina in 2023. She received a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from CCU in 2024.
