Ryan Shay enters his seventh season as part of the Bowling Green State University baseball staff. An assistant coach from 2015-20, the 2021 season will mark Shay's first as Associate Head Baseball Coach/Recruiting Coordinator. A former standout on the Falcons as a player, Shay coaches the hitters and infielders.
In the last full college baseball season in 2019, two of Shay's infielders -- shortstop Neil Lambert and second baseman Riley Minorik -- earned a spot on the MAC's All-Defensive Team. Minorik also earned the honor as a freshman. The Bowling Green defense as a unit committed the second-fewest errors in the conference in 2019.
Also under Shay's watch, first baseman Randy Righter (2015-18) became the program's all-time leader with 1,347 putouts. In his senior year in 2018, Righter took home Second Team All-MAC honors.
Prior to his appointment as assistant coach in 2015, Shay had plenty of baseball experience outside of his playing days at BGSU. Following a professional career in the Frontier League. Shay coached at Bowling Green, Divine Child High School, and Select Baseball Training Academy. He also served as an intern in the baseball office at Wayne State University while completing his Masters Degree.
The former shortstop finished his career as a two-time All-MAC performer, while also earning All-Mideast Region honors at shortstop in both 2008 and 2009. The Falcons won the MAC's regular-season title in both 2008 and 2009. He finished his career with 749 at-bats (first in school history), 177 runs scored (third), 252 hits (second), 53 doubles (second), 372 total bases (fourth), 205 games played (fourth), and 578 assists (second).
