Garry Galley was one of the top collegiate players during his 3 years at BGSU. An Ottawa, Ontario native, Galley played a big role in the Falcons winning Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season titles in each of his three seasons. BGSU compiled a 66-16-6 (.767) league mark during his three seasons while qualifying for the NCAA Tournament twice.
Galley helped the Falcons reach the pinnacle of college hockey by winning the 1984 NCAA title with a thrilling 5-4 win over Minnesota-Duluth in four overtimes. Galley was named to the all-tournament team at the national tournament, which was played at Lake Placid, N.Y.
Galley received All-American recognition in the 1983-84 season. He also was named to the First Team All-CCHA two years in a row, in 1982 and 1983. In his time playing in the 1984 NCAA title, he also was named to the NCAA Tournament (First Team).Â
Galley still holds school records for points in a season by a defenseman (67, 1983-84) and assists in a season by a defenseman (52, 1983-84). Galley's 152 career points tied him with Chuck Gyles for second among the highest scoring defensemen in BG history. Galley current stands at thirteenth in program history for career assists, with 117 assists, breaking the single-season record in the 1983-84 season. Galley also holds the title as having scored the most points by a defensemen in a single period (4, 1982-1983).Â
Galley participated in the IIHF World Championsips, representing Team Canada in 1993 and 1996, where the team took home silver.Â
Galley was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fifth round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. He continued his career with multiple other NHL teams including the Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabers, and New York Islanders. Galley also played for the Boston Bruins where he helped lead the team to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1989-90. Galley played in 78 games his rookie year in the NHL, scoring 8 goals and tallying 30 assists. Galley was a finalist for the Bill Masterson Award in 1994, and capped off his NHL career after 17 seasons in the league.Â
