The Brown and Orange dropped a four-point contest to close the exhibition schedule. The Latvian squad shot .448 from three-point range and drained a total of 13 treys en route to the win.
Bowling Green trailed nearly the entire afternoon. After a 9-9 tie five minutes in, the visitors led for the rest of the half, and had as much as a nine-point margin. Afra Smith scored six consecutive points near the end of the stanza, and a Karen Stocz free throw narrowed the gap to four points at the break.
BG scored the first five points of the second half, as a Dana Western three-pointer capped a 10-0 Falcon run and gave BG a 37-36 lead. Moments later, the Latvian squad went on a 12-2 run to take a 10-point lead, the biggest of the game, with 12:41 left. But, the Brown and Orange scored another 10 unanswered points midway through the stanza, including a pair of Jaymee Wappes triples. A Francine Miller layup gave the home team a 57-55 lead, but the Latvians scored the next six markers as part of a 9-1 run.
The Falcons still had a chance in the final minute, pulling to within two points on a Miller jumper. But, Ieva Tare made all four of her free-throw attempts in the last minute to keep BG from pulling even.
All five BG starters scored in double digits, led by Miller's 16 points. Wappes had 13 points, including four treys, while Sherry Kahle had 12 markers. Afra Smith and Western each had 11 points, and Western had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Wappes had a team-high five assists.
For the Latvian squad, Svetlana Zitane had a game-best 26 points. She made eight three-pointers, most from well beyond the arc. Tare had 18 points, 12 boards and nine assists.
