Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's golf team returns six letterwinners from last year's squad which placed sixth at the Mid-American Conference Championships, including five of six lineup regulars, losing only Heidi Hansen to graduation.
Said head coach Kurt Thomas, "Returning five of six starters will be a bonus for this year's team, plus the addition of two highly-touted newcomers will make practices more competitive which should help improve the team results."
Sophomore Shannon Smith finished with the best average on the team for the 1998-99 season despite being a freshman. She averaged 85.46 strokes per round which included two top 20 performances. Smith placed in a tie-for-13th at the MAC Championships while finishing in a tie-for-19th at the Falcon Invitational.
Senior Shannon Sharp was second on last year's squad with average score of 86.96. She tied-for-19th at the Illini Spring Classic for her only top 20 finish.
Senior Missy Hinds had her top finish in the Illini Spring Classic (tied-for-24th) with a 36-hole score of 168. Her best two round score of 164 came in the Falcon Invitational.
Senior Kate Kolesnik saved her best performance for the MAC championship where she tied-for-26th with a 54-hole score of 263.
"We need someone who will step up and consistently finish in the top 10," said Thomas.
Sophomore Angel Garrett and junior Jennifer Stiff also return. Garrett played 19 rounds last season with an average score of 88.63, while Stiff played both rounds of the Falcon Invitational.
Thomas will be looking to freshmen Shelley Binzel and Stephanie Elsea to add depth on the squad. Both newcomers enter the BG program with strong high school credentials and should help improve the overall talent level of the program.
Junior Robyn Gaier joined the team after fall try-outs but did not see any tournament action last year.
Thomas is looking for consistency from round to round and tournament to tournament from the entire squad and strong leadership from his three member senior class.
