FACULTY/STAFF NIGHT: BG's Wednesday game with Akron has been designated as "Faculty/Staff Night." All BGSU faculty and staff members will be able to pick up four complimentary tickets to the game at the Athletic Ticket Office in Memorial Hall. They will also receive four coupons, each good for a free hot dog and a free soda. Tickets are available now. Additionally, each BG women's basketball player will select a "favorite professor" or a "favorite staff member" who will be recognized at halftime of the game.
DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her second season at her alma mater, and has a record of 17-28. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 13th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 199-147 (.575). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
GOING FOR 200: BG coach Dee Knoblauch's next victory will be her 200th as a collegiate head coach ... Knoblauch, in her 13th season overall, enters the Akron game with a record of 199-147, for a winning percentage of .575.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU brings a 4-14 overall record into the week, and the Falcons are 2-6 in MAC play heading into the UA game. BGSU is looking to break a three-game losing streak, having suffered setbacks to Kent (106-84, Jan. 17), Western Michigan (88-67, Jan. 20) and Miami (100-69, Jan. 22) last week.
The Falcons are 1-4 at home, 2-7 on the road and 1-3 in neutral-site contests.
Sophomore forward Francine Miller leads the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding, with 17.2 points and 7.8 boards per game, and is averaging 18.1 points per MAC outing. Miller tied the school single-game record with 35 points at Kent last Monday. She is shooting .474 from the field, .449 from three-point range and .826 from the free-throw line, leading the team in the first two categories and ranking second from the stripe. Miller also ranks second on the Falcons in both assists (2.1 apg) and steals (1.4 spg).
Junior guard Angie Farmer is second on the team with 12.4 points per game. Farmer has started 10 games, including the last nine, and she leads the Falcons in three-pointers made (50) and free-throw accuracy (.833). Farmer is shooting .457 from the floor and .435 from three-point land to place second on the team in each category.
Senior forward Sherry Kahle is third on the team in scoring (9.8) and second in rebounding (6.8).
Junior forward Afra Smith and senior point guard Jaymee Wappes round out the team's top-five in scoring with 7.7 and 6.4 points per game, respectively. Wappes leads the Falcons in both assists (6.1 apg) and steals (2.1 spg).
Kahle, Miller, Smith and Wappes have started all 18 games, while Farmer and sophomore center Dana Western have started 10 and six, respectively.
BG ended the 1998-99 campaign with a 13-14 overall record, and the Falcons finished third in the MAC's East Division with a 9-7 league slate. BG earned the fifth seed for the MAC Tournament.
BGSU is shooting .413 from the field this year, while the opponents are shooting .424. The Falcons are scoring 71.6 points per contest, but allowing 81.8. BGSU is averaging 36.6 boards per game to the opponents' 43.4. The Falcons have shot .365 from three-point land, making a school-record 156 treys in a school-record 427 attempts. BGSU led the nation with 8.81 three-pointers made per game as of Tuesday morning (Jan. 18), and that figure stands at 8.67 treys per game heading into the Akron contest.
SCOUTING AKRON: Akron will bring a 5-12 overall record into Anderson Arena. The Zips are 1-5 in MAC play after Saturday's 70-58 loss to visiting Buffalo. UA has been hit hard by injuries this season, as potential starters Amanda Hubbard, Jamie Krivak and Jamie Scott all are out for the year. The Zips' one MAC win came on the road, a 19-point victory at Eastern Michigan. Junior center Cheryl Bowles paces the team in scoring (18.1 ppg), rebounding (8.7 rpg) and blocked shots (1.0 bpg). Senior guard Erika Glover averages 11.4 points per game, while senior forward Abby Hoy has 9.9 points and a team-high 5.1 assists. Sophomore forward Felicia Bell and junior guard Katie Hank round out the probable starting lineup. UA went 16-13 overall and 10-6 in MAC play last year, advancing to the National Invitation Tournament. Head coach Roxanne Allen, 33-43 in her third year in Akron, is 148-134 in her 11th year as a collegiate head coach.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with 11 of the 12 MAC opponents (BG trails Buffalo, 2-1), and BGSU holds a 26-1 advantage over Akron.
The Falcons are undefeated in 13 home games against the Zips, including an 89-66 victory in last year's only regular-season matchup (Jan. 27, 1999). That 23-point margin of victory stands as the biggest in Dee Knoblauch's tenure. Akron's only win in the series came in the last meeting, a 74-56 game in the MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round in Akron (Feb. 26, 1999).
LAST WEEK: The Falcons dropped three games last week, including a 106-84 setback at Kent Monday (Jan. 17) ... in that game, Francine Miller tied the school single-game record with 35 points ... on Thursday (Jan. 20), Kristin Koetsier and Shelsea Erving combined for 52 points as Western Michigan dealt the Falcons an 88-67 setback at Anderson Arena ... Koetsier, just a freshman, had a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds, while Erving added 22 points and seven boards ... the visitors, who never trailed, scored the first six points of the game, and held a 16-6 lead after a Danielle Mueller layup seven-and-a-half minutes in ... WMU still led by 10, 28-18, with seven minutes remaining in the half, when the Falcons made a run ... a Karen Stocz layup was followed by a Dana Western three-pointer, and the lead was cut in half ... after a pair of Koetsier free throws, Angie Farmer buried a trey to cut the WMU advantage to four points, at 32-28 ... but, the Falcons could draw no closer ... the Western lead was 15 at the half, and BG could never again get nearer than double digits ... in the second half, the Broncos led by as many as 36 points ... the Brown and Orange scored the last eight points of the game to provide the final 21-point margin ... for BG, Western was the high scorer, with a career-best 15 points off the bench ... Miller added 12 points and a team-best 10 rebounds ... Jaymee Wappes had six assists to lead the Brown and Orange in that department ... the Falcons committed just nine turnovers in the game, a season low ... WMU, however, turned the ball over only six times on the evening ... it was snowing outside Miami's Millett Hall Saturday (Jan. 22), but it was raining three-pointers inside ... unfortunately for the Falcons, Miami made 16 of the 23 treys in the game, as the RedHawks cruised to a 100-69 win ... MU's Jamie Stewart set a MAC record by making nine treys, and the RedHawks went 16-of-31 from long range ... at the game's outset, both teams were on fire ... BGSU made four of its first five shots in the game, including three from three-point land ... Sherry Kahle made two of those triples and scored eight of BG's first 11 points ... meanwhile, MU made its first four attempts from the field, including three treys ... the game was tied at 11-11 with just 2:18 elapsed ... the Brown and Orange took a six-point lead at 22-16 with 13:41 left in the first half, after baskets by Stocz and Miller ... the RedHawks simply took off and ran away from the Falcons after that, however ... Miami scored the next 10 points of the contest to begin a 25-2 run ... in fact, the RedHawks finished the half by scoring 39 of the final 47 points of the stanza to lead by 25 (55-30) at the break ... it was more of the same in the second half, as MU scored the first 16 points of the stanza to complete a 24-0 run ... when Western scored with 12:56 left in the game, it marked BG's first points in a span of 10:37, and ended a 55-8 run over a 20-minute stretch ... MU led by as many as 42 points, at 74-32 ... Stewart finished with a game-high 29 points ... for the Brown and Orange, Kahle had 16 points, going 3-of-4 from three-point land ... Miller had her second double-double in as many games and her seventh of the year, with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Farmer added 11 points ... Wappes had eight assists and four steals.
MILLER BACK TO FORM: Sophomore Francine Miller was held to a season-low four points in the first Kent meeting, but she bounced back in a big way ... in the return match, Miller tied the school record with 35 points against the Golden Flashes ... she made a career-high 12 field goals, and tied her career best with six three-pointers ... since that first KSU game, Miller has averaged 20.1 points per contest ... that average includes a then career-high 28 points at Central Michigan, including 20 in the second half ... she also scored 18 points vs. Buffalo, 17 at Toledo, 19 against Ohio and 12 vs. WMU and Miami ... the school record of 35 points was originally set by Jackie Motycka (Dec. 12, 1987, vs. Washington State) ... that mark was tied by Jacki Raterman (Feb. 9, 1999, vs. Ball State) last year.
WEARY WAPPES: Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes leads the Falcons with an average of 35.0 minutes played per game ... over the last 11 contests, Wappes has played 418 of the 440 minutes, an average of 38.0 per game ... Wappes has played all 40 minutes four times during that stretch ... she missed one minute vs. both Washington State (collided with Sherry Kahle while diving for a loose ball) and Hampton (collided with a Lady Pirate player) due to injuries ... in the latter contest, she was back at the scorer's table almost immediately, ready to check into the game ... Wappes played "only" 37 minutes against Kent (first meeting) and 38 vs. both Buffalo and WMU ... Wappes, in foul trouble for much of the second KSU game, played just 31 minutes ... in the last 11 games, she has dished out 78 assists (7.1 apg) while committing just 42 turnovers ... she also has had 89 points, an average of 8.1 per game.
YOU MAY FIRE WHEN READY, MA'AM: With at least nine games remaining in the 1999-2000 season, the Falcons already have broken the school seasonal records for three-point shots attempted and made ... last year, BG broke both records by making 135 treys in an even 400 attempts ... those totals shattered the old records of 97 triples made and 296 attempted, set by the 1994-95 squad ... this year, through 18 games, BGSU has attempted 427 treys, making 156 ... that is an average of 8.67 three-pointers made and 23.7 attempted per game ... those numbers project to 234 successful "threes" in 641 attempts over a 27-game schedule.
THEY'RE FIRING AWAY, TOO: Believe it or not, opponents have hoisted a total of 465 shots from behind the arc, an average of 25.8 per game ... BG foes have made 166 treys this year ... the opponents have taken at least 15 three-point shots in all but one game (Kent tried just 13 in the first meeting), and have shot 20 or more treys 12 times ... the foes have taken 41 three-point attempts three times this season.
FALCONS SET MORE RECORDS: As a team, the Falcons tied a school record by making 14 three-pointers at Kent last Monday ... that ties the record set vs. Ole Miss in November ... the Falcons broke the school record for treys attempted, with 36 vs. Kent ... the "old" record of 35 was set vs. Hampton in late December ... entering the season, the school record for three-point shots made in a game was 12 ... BG has hit double digits in that area six times this year ... BG's single-game record for three-pointers attempted was 29 heading into the 1999-2000 campaign ... the Falcons have surpassed that total four times.
NATIONAL LEADERS: The NCAA released the latest women's basketball statistics last Tuesday (Jan. 18), and the Falcons were listed in several categories ... individually, junior Angie Farmer was ranked among the national leaders in three-point field-goals per game ... Farmer was tied for 18th with a 2.9 average ... sophomore Francine Miller was 18th in the country in three-point percentage, at .468 ... as a team, the Falcons led the nation in three-pointers made per game, with 8.8, and BG was 12th in free-throw pct., at .749 ... currently, Farmer is averaging 2.78 treys, while Miller's three-point pct. is .449 ... the Falcons are now draining 8.67 triples per game and shooting .747 from the charity stripe ... the next NCAA stats are scheduled to be released late Tuesday (Jan. 25) or early Wednesday (Jan. 26).
ADLINGTON JOINS TEAM: Junior Jackie Adlington has joined the Falcon women's basketball team ... the Western Michigan game marked the first time she suited up for the Brown and Orange ... a junior from Toledo, by way of Cleveland State, Adlington's first practice with the Falcons was Thursday's (Jan. 20) shootaround before the WMU game ... she participated in BG's Friday practice at Miami, then got into Saturday's (Jan. 22) game at Oxford ... Adlington, who wears uniform #11, played four minutes, splitting a pair of free throws to score her first point as a Falcon ... Adlington added an assist and a blocked shot ... she played collegiately for CSU, but had not seen game action for two years prior to Saturday's Miami game.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: A number of current Falcons already are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... sophomore Francine Miller currently ranks as the all-time BGSU leader in career three-point percentage, while junior Angie Farmer is third ... Farmer is third all-time with her 83 three-pointers made, while Miller is fifth with 65 ... seniors Sherry Kahle and Jaymee Wappes and are close behind with 59 and 56, respectively ... Kahle is fourth all-time with 196 three-point attempts, followed in succession by Farmer (192), Wappes (167) and Miller (148) ... on the single-season lists, Farmer is third with 50 treys made this season ... she needs three more to tie the all-time BG seasonal record ... Miller has made 31 treys (good for 10th place) and is shooting .449 from three-point land this year ... that percentage, if she can maintain it, would be the top average in school history ... Farmer is currently fourth on that list.

WAPPES DISHES 'EM OUT: Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes is moving up the BGSU career assists list ... Wappes currently ranks fifth all-time with 333 helpers in her career ... her total of 110 this year is just one shy of her total for all of last season ... Wappes needs 14 more assists to tie Cathy Koch for fourth place on the career list ... someone named Dee Knoblauch holds the career record, with 673.
WESTERN VS. WESTERN: Sophomore Dana Western came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points against Western Michigan Thursday (Jan. 20) ... Western made a career-high six field goals, including three three-pointers (also a career best) ... she was 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-5 from long range.
FALCON NOTES: The Falcons had a season low nine turnovers in the Western Michigan game ... BGSU had a season-low nine personal fouls in that game, just one off the school record for a MAC game ... senior point guard Jaymee Wappes fouled out of the Kent game Monday (Jan. 17) ... that marked the first time in her collegiate career that Wappes had picked up five fouls ... the KSU game was the 95th of her BGSU tenure ... senior Sherry Kahle has played in all 102 games since her arrival on the BGSU campus in the fall of 1996 ... she has started 74 contests in her career, including the last 45 games ... Kahle is BG's top active scorer with 790 points ... Kahle has worn a protective mask in each of the last six games ... she donned the clear mask after suffering a black eye and a bruised cheekbone in the Washington State game, and having the injury reaggravated several times since ... freshman point guard Regina Smith has left the team ... Smith, who left the squad Jan. 9, cited a lack of playing time as the reason for her departure ... Bowling Green's Feb. 25 game at Buffalo is scheduled to be televised as part of the MAC's TV package ... the regular-season finale between the Falcons and Bulls is scheduled to be shown by Fox Sports Net Ohio ... the MAC office recently announced that the game will begin at 8:00 p.m.
