BGSU Baseball Ink Three To Letters Of Intent

Bowling Green State University Head Baseball Coach Danny Schmitz announced today the signing of three student-athletes to national letters of intent in the early signing period.
Schmitz said Brett Baumgartner, a 6-2, 180-pound pitcher from Sylvania, Ohio, Kelly Hunt, a 6-6, 215-pound infielder/catcher from Toledo, Ohio, and Corey Loomis, a 6-2, 175-pound infielder from Pemberville, Ohio, have each decided to attend BGSU beginning in the fall of 1999.
Baumgartner was selected first team All-Northern Lakes League last spring as a member of the Sylvania Southview Cougars after compiling a 6-3 mark with a 2.85 earned-run average. He struck out 73 batters in 63 innings while walking only 20. A member of the National Honor Society, the right-handed pitcher played this past summer for the Northwest Ohio Mavericks coached by Jason Brown.
Hunt was named to the All-District first team as a both a sophomore and junior while playing for Toledo Central Catholic. The Toledo native was also named to the All-City team the last two seasons and was a teammate of fellow recruit Brett Baumgartner on the Northwest Ohio Mavericks this past summer. Hunt hit .471 as a sophomore with an .612 slugging percentage, while hitting .437 last spring with an .887 slugging percentage including 19 extra-base hits.
Loomis, a left-handed hitting shortstop, has played for Gary Haas Eastwood Eagles high school club earning all-Suburban Lakes League and All-Wood county honors the last three years. He was selected to the All-SLL first team as both a freshman and sophomore while earning second-team honors in 1998. The three-time Sentinel Tribune all-county honoree, batted .398 during the summer of 1998 with 24 home runs and 83 RBI in 65 games for the Pemberville American Legion. A three-year starter for the Eagles, Loomis has a career batting average of .360 with 15 home runs, 70 RBI and 45 stolen bases. As a junior at Eastwood, he batted .315 with 5 home runs , 28 RBI and 21 stolen bases.
