KENT, Ohio - Despite having more kills and blocks, as well as a higher hitting percentage, than the opponent, the Bowling Green State University volleyball team suffered a five-game loss Friday night (Oct. 27). Host Kent State University claimed the win (15-8, 5-15, 15-11, 3-15, 15-9) in the Mid-American Conference match, held at the Memorial Athletic & Convocation Center.
The Falcons, now 13-8 overall and 6-6 in MAC play, dropped all three of the odd-numbered games, while hitting a combined .400 in the even-numbered contests. For the match, BGSU had a hitting percentage of .244 with 77 kills, while KSU (now 7-14, 4-7 MAC) hit .194 with 75 kills.
Freshman Susie Norris had 21 kills to lead five Falcons in double digits in that category. Norris also had 15 digs on the night, as five members of the Brown and Orange also hit double digits in that category.
Two other Falcons joined Norris with double-doubles on the night, as juniors Caty Rommeck and Amber Vorst turned the trick. Rommeck, who led BG with a hitting percentage of .296, had 12 kills, a team-high 17 digs and six blocks on the night. Vorst had 12 kills and 15 digs off the bench.
Senior JoAnna Papageorgiou also hit double figures with 10 kills, and added nine digs and six blocks. She tied Rommeck for match honors in the last category.
Redshirt sophomore Kristin Gamby had 18 kills off the bench. After posting a career total of 20 kills in her first year and six weeks, Gamby has registered 88 kills over the last five matches.
Junior Natalie Becker had 56 assists and 16 digs, while classmate Karen Tangeman had 12 digs on the night.
For the Golden Flashes, Shiva Davis had a match-best 24 kills and hit .444. She added 15 digs, one behind teammate Carrie McEnery.
The loss dropped the Falcons into third place in the MAC's East Division, a half-game behind idle Akron (6-5 MAC). Ohio lost at Central Michigan on Friday night, but still leads the East with a 9-4 league record.
The Falcons will remain in Northeast Ohio to take on Akron in a Saturday (Oct. 28) matinee. First serve for that match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at UA's Rhodes Arena.
