The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team evened its overall record at 7-7 with a 3-0 triumph over visiting Buffalo Friday at Cochrane Field. The Falcons are now 3-2 in Mid-American Conference play. The Bulls fall to 5-8-2 overall and finish with a 1-5 league mark.
After a scoreless first half that only saw one shot on goal (by BG's Matt Lyons with 19 minutes remaining) that was cleared away by a Buffalo defender, the Falcons scored three times in the second half for the victory.
Junior Detrick Matthews tallied his third of the season at 61:37 off an assist from Lyons. BG increased its lead to 2-0 when Gene Braxton scored at 82:32 off an assist from Lyons. Lyons then completed the Falcon scoring with his fourth of the campaign off assists from Fred Degand and Matthews.
Freshman goalkeeper David DeGraff made one save for the Falcons, while Buffalo goalkeeper Brian Wozniak also made one save.
BG concludes MAC play with a home match on Sunday against Akron (3 p.m.). The Falcons wrap-up the regular-season on Tuesday with a home match versus Michigan State (3:30 p.m.).
In other conference action on Friday, Western Michigan upset Northern Illinois, 2-1 OT, in Kalamazoo. The BG - Akron match on Sunday will be the final conference contest of the year. Akron leads the MAC at 4-1, Kentucky and Marshall both finished 4-2, BG is 3-2, NIU finished at 3-3, Buffalo finished at 1-5 and Western Michigan finished at 1-5. Should BG defeat the Zips, there would be a four-way tie for first place. BG and Akron are both 1-1 versus Kentucky and Marshall, while the Thundering Herd went 2-1 and Kentucky 1-2.
