CLEVELAND, Ohio - Three Bowling Green State University seniors were named to the All-Mid-American Conference Team for men's soccer, the league office announced. Fred Degand and Adam Erhard each earned all-league first-team honors, while Matt Lyons was named to the second team.
Degand, a native of Highland Park, Ill., earned All-MAC First-Team laurels for the second consecutive year. He enters MAC Tournament play ranked second on the team in goals (three) and points (11) this season.
Erhard is tied for third on the squad in scoring, and his seven points all have come on assists. The North Olmsted, Ohio, native is second on the Falcons in that category.
Lyons, who hails from Maineville, Ohio, leads the Brown and Orange in goals (five), assists (eight) and points (18).
Marshall's Bob Gray was named the Gary V. Palmisano Coach of the Year, while Thundering Herd sophomore Byron Carmichael was named the MAC Player of the Year. Western Michigan's Reece Richardson earned league newcomer-of-the-year honors.
The Palmisano coach-of-the-year award is named after the late BGSU mentor.
Joining Erhard and Degand on the all-league first team are MU's Carmichael, Akron's Kyle Milligan, Greg Prusha, Ørjan Bjnesø and Christer Larson, Kentucky's Ilkka Jantti and Giovanni Fernandes, Buffalo's Brian McCallion, and Dan Parisi of Northern Illinois.
The second team, in addition to Lyons, consists of MU's Taly Goode, Dennis Ahebwa, Vivian Baku, Chris Donovan and Dave Spaulding, Western Michigan's Mike Bravo, Rob Friend, Richardson and Scott Duhl, UA's Tracy Dowe and NIU's Nick Park. There are 12 members of the second team due to a tie in the voting.
The Falcons of head coach Mel Mahler are preparing for the MAC Tournament, which begins this weekend in Buffalo, N.Y. BGSU, the top seed for the seven-team tourney, has earned a first-round bye. After Friday's three first-round matches, the teams will be reseeded, and the Falcons (8-7-1 overall, 4-2 MAC) will face the lowest-remaining seed in a Sunday (Nov. 5) semifinal match. Kickoff time for that contest is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
