THE GAMES: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, looking to rebound after a road loss earlier this week, heads to Auburn, Ala., for the Lady Tiger Classic this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 24-25). The Falcons (1-1) will meet Charleston Southern University in Friday's first round, with the game scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum (10, 500).
Following the CSU game, the Falcons will face either IUPUI or host Auburn University in Saturday action. The consolation game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m., with the championship slated for a 3:00 p.m. start.
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 25-32. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 207-151 (.578). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a 1-1 record on the young season, having opened the 2000-01 campaign with a 95-88 win over Youngstown State at venerable Anderson Arena Saturday (Nov. 18). In that game, four of the Falcons' five starters hit double digits in the scoring department.
Tuesday night (Nov. 21), however, the Brown and Orange fell at Eastern Kentucky by an 89-61 final. The hosts went on a game-ending 40-16 run to break a four-point game wide open.
Seniors Angie Farmer and Afra Smith lead the team in scoring, averaging 13.0 and 12.0 points, respectively. The team co-captains each scored 20 points in the YSU win. Junior Francine Miller and freshman point guard Lindsay Austin also are averaging in double digits. Miller is scoring 11.5 points per game and Austin has an even 11.0 average.
Junior Dana Western, who led the team with 11 points off the bench at EKU, is averaging 9.5 points on the young season.
Miller (5.0 rpg) currently leads the team in rebounding, followed by Smith and freshman Stefanie Wenzel (4.5 rpg each). Smith, on the strength of a career-high seven assists at EKU, leads the team with 4.5 helpers per outing. Both Smith and Austin have a total of three steals this year.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
The Falcons were 6-5 at home, 4-8 on the road and 1-4 in neutral-site contests a year ago.
This season, BGSU is shooting .431 from the floor, while the opponents have a field-goal percentage of .417. The Falcons are shooting .804 from the free-throw line, having made 45 charity tosses in 56 attempts through two games. The Falcons are shooting .306 from three-point range, while the foes are shooting .262 from behind the arc.
SCOUTING CSU: Charleston Southern enters the BGSU game with a 1-0 record ... the Lady Buccaneers opened the season with a 91-30 home win over Southern Virginia Saturday (Nov. 18) ... CSU welcomes back six letterwinners, including a pair of starters, from last year's team that finished 9-19 overall and 4-10 in the Big South Conference ... in the Southern Virginia game, the Lady Bucs were led by guard Katie LaRue's 14 points ... Marea Daniels and Lisa Crandall, both coming off the bench, had 12 and 10 points, respectively ... Crandall had a double-double, with 12 rebounds ... starters Erin Jedikowski and Keely Grawcock had 11 and 10 boards, respectively, as CSU held a 66-37 advantage in that department ... Lakeshia Bryant had seven assists ... head coach Fred Francello is 76-118 in his eighth year at the school ... he has an overall record of 117-176 in his 11th season as a collegiate head coach.
SCOUTING AUBURN: Auburn is 1-0 heading into Wednesday night's (Nov. 22) home game vs. UNC Asheville ... the Tigers are ranked 18th in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll and 20th in the Associated Press poll ... AU defeated Southern, 76-60, in Monday's opener (Nov. 20) ... six of the eight Tigers that saw action hit double digits in scoring, led by junior guard Carol Smith's 15 markers ... Lori Nero had 14 points and 13 rebounds in the win, while Smith added six assists and four steals ... head coach Joe Ciampi welcomed back eight letterwinners and two starters from last year's 22-8 team ... that squad went 9-5 in the Southeastern Conference ... Ciampi is 491-158 in his 22nd year at Auburn and 529-168 in his 24th year overall.
SCOUTING IUPUI: IUPUI is 0-1 heading into a Wednesday home game against Eastern Michigan ... the Jaguars lost Friday's (Nov. 17) home opener, 83-66, to UW-Green Bay ... head coach Kris Simpson has five letterwinners, but no starters, returning from last year ... that team went 11-20 overall and 7-9 in the Mid-Continent Conference ... junior guard Amber Holle led the team with 17 points vs. UWGB, while sophomore forward Tiffany Kyser and senior guard Angie Watt each chipped in with 13 ... freshman forward Natalie Hendricks had a team-high seven rebounds, while Kyser had six ... Simpson is 41-56 in her fourth year as a collegiate head coach, all at IUPUI.
THE SERIES: The Falcons have never faced any of this weekend's three potential opponents in women's basketball.
LAST TIME OUT: A 40-16 run by Eastern Kentucky propelled the host Lady Colonels to an 89-61 win over the Falcons Tuesday (Nov. 21) ... BGSU never led, and trailed by eight (41-33) at the half ... the Falcons got within four with just under 14 minutes left, before EKU began the game-ending run ... junior Dana Western was the lone double-digit scorer, with 11 points off the bench ... she went 5-of-8 from the field ... freshmen Kelly Kapferer and Lindsay Austin had nine and seven points, respectively ... Kapferer also had two blocked shots ... senior Afra Smith had a career-high seven assists ... junior Francine Miller and redshirt freshman Pam Brown each had five rebounds to tie for team honors ... the hosts shot 46.6% from the field, while the Falcons converted at a 36.5% rate.
FIVE FALCONS DEBUT VS. YSU: A total of five Falcons made their respective collegiate debuts in BGSU's win over Youngstown State Saturday ... true freshmen Lindsay Austin, Emily Pohl, Kelly Kapferer and Stefanie Wenzel saw action, as did redshirt freshman Pam Brown ... Austin and Pohl split time at the point guard spot, with Austin getting the start (see next two notes for more info. on Austin) ... Pohl scored two points and added a rebound and an assist in 11 minutes of action ... Wenzel had five points and five rebounds in her 13 minutes of action ... she hit her only three-point attempt, and three of her boards came at the offensive end of the floor ... Kapferer had a pair of rebounds and an assist in six minutes ... Brown had two caroms in her five minutes.
YOUNG AT THE POINT: It is safe to say that the Falcons will start a freshman at the point-guard spot ... both of the team's point guards are frosh ... Lindsay Austin got the start in the win over Youngstown State ... she had a solid debut, with 15 points, four assists and three steals ... she made all three of her field-goal attempts, and showed a propensity for getting to the free-throw line ... Austin went 9-of-11 from the charity stripe ... she played 29 minutes in the win ... Emily Pohl, the other freshman point guard, saw 11 minutes of action.
FIRST FROSH TO START OPENER SINCE...: Point guard Lindsay Austin became the first freshman to start the opening game of the season in four years ... the last freshman to start the opener was Sherry Kahle in the 1996-97 lidlifter against Notre Dame (Nov. 23, 1996).
SUCCESS IN HOME OPENERS: The Falcons kept a rather impressive streak going in the Youngstown State game ... BGSU has now captured 12 of the last 13 home openers ... the only loss among the last 13 home-opening contests came to nationally-ranked Notre Dame, an eventual national semifinalist, in 1996.
INJURY REPORT: Senior center Jackie Adlington went down in the first half of the win over YSU ... Adlington, who started that contest, broke her foot and will be sidelined at least four weeks.
KAPFERER SOLID AT EKU: Freshman Kelly Kapferer played sparingly against YSU due to foul trouble, but she had a solid game off the bench at Eastern Kentucky ... Kapferer scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in the contest ... she added two assists, and also blocked a pair of shots ... Kapferer played 18 minutes in the game.
SMITH DISHES 'EM OUT: Senior Afra Smith had a career-high seven assists at EKU ... that total more than doubled her previous BGSU career best ... Smith had a previous high of three assists on three occasions.
A FEW MORE NOTES FROM THE YSU GAME: BGSU's total of 35 free throws made against Youngstown State fell just one shy of the school record ... the Brown and Orange made 36 against both Eastern Michigan (March 6, 1990) and Kent (Jan. 12, 1997) ... the Falcons shot .509 from the field against YSU ... BGSU made 50% or more of the team's shots from the floor only three times in 28 games last year, going 2-1 in those contests ... the Falcons won despite allowing over 80 points for the first time since a 98-93 overtime win over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 20, 1999 ... BGSU was 0-10 when allowing 80 or more points last winter.
1999-2000 FALCONS ENJOY LATE-SEASON SUCCESS: BGSU is looking to build upon the success enjoyed late last season ... after going nearly all year without winning back-to-back games, the Falcons had a 6-16 overall record (and a 4-8 MAC mark, tied for the 11th seed) on Valentine's Day ... the Brown and Orange rallied to win five consecutive games, including road wins against Akron and Buffalo to close the regular season, winding up in a deadlock for fifth place overall ... BG capped off the win streak with a victory over Ohio in the MAC Tournament First Round, before seeing the season come to an end with a quarterfinal loss to Western Michigan ... the Falcons ended the year with an overall record of 11-17, and BGSU went 8-8 in MAC regular-season play.
MILLER ON PRESEASON ALL-MAC TEAM: Junior Francine Miller was named to the preseason All-MAC Team in October ... voting for the five-player team was conducted by members of the MAC News Media Association.
HONORS ARE NOTHING NEW FOR MILLER, THOUGH: Junior Francine Miller heads a cast of eight returning letterwinners for the Brown and Orange in 2000-2001 ... last year, Miller became just the second sophomore in school history to earn all-league first-team laurels, joining Jackie Motycka in that exclusive club.
TREY BIEN! FALCONS SET NCAA RECORD FOR THREE-POINTERS MADE: It is safe to say that the 2000-2001 edition of the Falcons will probably attempt a great many shots from behind the three-point arc ... the three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... in fact, last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... the only previous team to average more than nine triples per game was the 1993-94 South Carolina team (9.19) ... (Iowa State also cracked that barrier last year, averaging 9.09 treys per outing.) ... BGSU's total of 259 successful treys smashed the MAC record of 234, held by the 1993-94 Kent (28 games) and Toledo (32 games) squads ... the Falcons broke the league record in the season's 26th game ... through two games this season, the Falcons are averaging 5.50 three-pointers made per contest.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... the old school record of .760 was set by the 1997-98 team ... the Falcons are shooting .804 from the line in 2000-01.
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: In the first 12 seasons after the three-point shot was adopted (1986-87 to 1997-98), Bowling Green teams made a total of 666 three-pointers in 1890 attempts ... over the last two years, BGSU's totals are nearly 60 percent of the totals during those first 12 years ... Knoblauch's teams made 394 treys in 1,110 tries.
THREE BALL, CORNER POCKET: In Mid-American Conference play last season, the Falcons averaged almost 10 three-point field goals made per game, with 159 successful triples in 16 games ... in the eight conference games played at venerable Anderson Arena, the Falcons made an average of 11.75 three-pointers per game, shooting an eye-popping .461 from behind the arc in those eight games ... BGSU made at least eight treys in each MAC home game.
IS THAT A NEW RECORD? Before Dee Knoblauch returned to campus, the school records for three-point field goals made and attempted in a season were 97 and 296, respectively ... Knoblauch's first team made 135 treys in an even 400 attempts, and last year's squad shattered the records yet again, making a MAC-record 259 triples in 710 attempts.
FARMER FIRES FOR THREE: Angie Farmer returns for her senior year after shattering the BGSU seasonal records for three-pointers made and attempted ... Farmer sank 78 treys in 186 attempts last winter, and her .419 success rate ranked sixth on that BGSU single-season list ... four players -- Farmer, Francine Miller (43, fifth), Sherry Kahle (42, sixth) and Jaymee Wappes (39, eighth) -- cracked the BG season list for three-pointers made.
MILLER MAKES 'EM, TOO: While Farmer was setting the single-season school record for three-pointers made last year, Francine Miller was setting the three-point percentage mark ... Miller's .453 success rate from behind the arc (43-of-95) broke the previous record of .439, set by Farmer in the 1998-99 campaign ... Miller entered her junior season as the career leader in that category, with a .443 rate (77-of-174) ... through two games, she now has a career percentage of .426, still good enough for second in that category.
JUST A TYPICAL NIGHT: The Falcons' game vs. Mississippi last Nov. 26 set the tone for the entire season ... in the third game of the year, BGSU and Ole Miss combined to make 31 three-pointers in 75 attempts, in the process setting NCAA single-game records for two teams ... at the time, BG's 14 successful three-pointers set a school record, but as the year went on, the effort would prove to be just a typical output for the Brown and Orange (see next note).
WRITE THOSE RECORDS IN PENCIL: Entering last season, the school record for three-pointers made in a game was 12 ... BGSU hit double digits in that category no fewer than 12 times last year, including a 16-for-38 performance - both school records - in a win over Akron (Jan. 26).
58 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 58 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
ANDER-RIFFIC! In eight home conference games last season, the Falcons made an average of 11.75 three-point field goals per contest ... BGSU shot an eye-popping .461 from three-point range in those games, having made 94 treys in 204 attempts ... the Falcons made at least eight triples in each game, and drained 67 in the last five home contests combined ... adding in the MAC Tournament first-round game against Ohio, the Falcons were 102-of-223 (.457) from long range against league foes at Anderson.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Junior Francine Miller has a total of 10 double-doubles in her career ... nine of those double-doubles came last year, including four in MAC play and another in the first round of the conference tournament.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Several current Falcons are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... junior Francine Miller is ranked second on the all-time BGSU list for career three-point percentage (.426, 78-of-183), while senior Angie Farmer is third (.420, 115-of-274) ... sophomore Kim Griech is seventh on that list (.365, 27-of-74) ... Farmer is in second place all-time with 115 three-pointers made, while Miller is tied for fifth with 78 ... Farmer has moved into a tie for second place with 274 career three-point attempts, while Miller is seventh with 183 triple tries ... on the single-season lists, Farmer owns the school records with 78 treys made and 186 attempted last season ... Miller made 43 treys last year, good for fifth-most all-time, and set a new school record by shooting .453 from long range.
CAPTAIN'S LOG: BGSU seniors Angie Farmer and Afra Smith have been chosen as team captains for the 2000-2001 season.
