BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team kept its perfect home record against arch-rival Toledo intact, beating the Rockets in three games Friday night (Nov. 3). BGSU captured the Mid-American Conference battle (15-7, 15-6, 15-6) at Anderson Arena.
The Falcons, now 15-8 overall and 8-6 in MAC play, have never lost to the Rockets in 21 home matches. BGSU holds a 39-8 overall advantage in the all-time series.
The Rockets (7-15, 4-9 MAC), who swept BGSU in an Oct. 4 match in the Glass City, broke out to a fast start Friday, taking a 6-1 lead in game one. But, a kill by senior JoAnna Papageorgiou began a 7-0 BGSU run, and the Falcons never trailed again on the evening.
In that first game, BG rallied from the 6-1 deficit to score 13 of the game's final 14 points. Papageorgiou had three kills and a service ace during that run, while sophomore Kristin Gamby had two kills and a block.
BGSU scored the first six points in each of the final two games, saw the Rockets close the gap to two points in each case, then closed out both contests. BGSU used a game-ending 8-1 run to break away in the second contest, and the Falcons scored the final six points of game three.
On the night, Papageorgiou hit a match-best .474, and her 11 kills placed her second behind Gamby. Gamby hit .303 with a match-high 12 kills, as the Falcons hit .261 as a team to the Rockets' .056.
Defensively, the Falcons got a match-high 16 digs from freshman Susie Norris, while junior Caty Rommeck had 15. Rommeck's four blocks put her one behind Gamby's total on the evening, as the Falcons held a 9-4 blocking advantage on the night.
Junior Natalie Becker dished out 31 assists.
The visitors were led by Jessica Buck's 11 kills, while Theresa Estes had 11 digs for UT.
The Falcons now have a 10-2 record at Anderson Arena this season, the team's most wins at home since the 1992 team went 12-1.
Gamby, who totalled 20 kills during the first year-and-a-half of her collegiate career, now has a total of 115 kills over the last seven matches.
A crowd of 496, the largest at Anderson Arena this season, saw the UT match.
The Falcons now hit the road for a Saturday (Nov. 4) match at Marshall. Start time for that match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at MU's Henderson Center.
Following the trip to Huntington, the Brown and Orange will return home to face Oakland University in a Tuesday (Nov. 7) non-conference match, also beginning at 7:00 p.m. BGSU then closes the regular season with four road matches.
