Oxford, Ohio -
The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team ended a 12-year drought against Miami University earning a hard-fought 66-60 victory over the RedHawks Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall. The win was the first for a Falcon team at Millett Hall since a 65-59 decision in the 1987-88 season.
Bowling Green looked like it was going to blow the game open early scoring the first 13 points of the contest. The Falcons continued their torrid shooting, they made 13 of their first 15 attempts from the field, which provided the basis for their 36-20 lead at the 5:35 mark of the first half, their biggest lead of the game.
But, Miami fought back on the strength of a 10-0 run they got back in the game closing the gap to 36-30 at the 2:20 mark. BG scored the final points of the first half to take an eight-point lead to the locker room.
BG shot 71.4% (15-of-21) from the floor in the first half.
The Falcons built a 12-point lead (44-32) early in the second half before the RedHawks made another run, a 15-3 barrage, that knotted the score at 47-all with 9:35 left.
From there, the Falcons scored the next four points, two Brandon Pardon free throws and a pair from Anthony Stacey, and the defense stiffened. Miami would get no closer than two points the rest of the way.
BG scored six straight points to take a 59-51 lead at the 2:51 mark to ice the victory.
Stacey led the Falcons with 19 points, 13 in the second half, including BG's last four points, while Lan Matela added 12 points and Dave Esterkamp 10 markers.
Trent Jackson added 10 rebounds as the Falcons held Maimi to just 34.9% shooting from the floor.
With the win, BG improves to 18-6 overall and 10-4 in the MAC East Division.
