BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - THIS WEEK: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, looking to return to winning ways, returns home for a pair of Mid-American Conference games. The Falcons (5-15 overall, 3-7 MAC) will begin a four-game homestand tonight (Feb. 7) with a game against Northern Illinois University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena (5,000).
Following the NIU game, the Brown and Orange will host Eastern Michigan University Saturday (Feb. 12), with start time scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her second season at her alma mater, and has a record of 18-29. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 13th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 200-148 (.575). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.

Farmer is shooting .450 from the floor and .813 from the free-throw line to place second on the team in each category.
Senior forward Sherry Kahle is third on the team in scoring (9.7) and second in rebounding (7.1).
Junior forward Afra Smith and sophomore center Dana Western round out the team's top-five in scoring with 8.5 and 6.5 points, respectively. Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes leads the Falcons in both assists (6.1 apg) and steals (2.0 spg).
Kahle, Miller, Smith and Wappes have started all 20 games this year.
BG ended the 1998-99 campaign with a 13-14 overall record, and the Falcons finished third in the MAC's East Division with a 9-7 league slate. BG earned the fifth seed for the MAC Tournament.
BGSU is shooting .413 from the field this year, while the opponents are shooting .421. The Falcons are scoring 72.1 points per contest, but allowing 80.7. BGSU is averaging 36.8 boards per game to the opponents' 44.0. The Falcons have shot .358 from three-point land, making a school-record 177 treys in a school-record 495 attempts. BGSU led the nation with 9.05 three-pointers made per game as of Tuesday morning (Feb. 1), and that figure stands at 8.85 treys per game heading into the NIU contest.
THREE-POINT RECORDS: With at least seven games remaining for the Falcons in the 1999-2000 campaign, BGSU already has shattered the school single-season records for both three-point field goals made (177) and attempted (495) ... the "old" records, set just last year, were 135 treys made in 400 attempts ... the MAC record for successful "threes" in a season is 234, set by the 1993-94 teams at both Kent (28 games) and Toledo (32 games) ... BGSU is currently on a pace to sink 239 treys over a 27-game schedule ... the NCAA record for three-pointers in a season is 289, set by Colorado State last year.
SCOUTING NIU: Northern Illinois brings a 5-16 overall record into the week, and the Huskies check into tonight's game with a 4-6 ledger in MAC play. Last week, the team recorded a 61-60 win over Toledo (Feb. 2) before losing at Eastern Michigan, 72-51 (Feb. 5). Individually, junior center Michelle Johnson leads the Huskies in scoring, with 13.4 points per game. Senior guard Charbea Haller averages 13.0 points and leads the team in both assists (3.0 apg) and steals (2.5 spg). Freshman guard Kristan Knake and senior guard Kelli Ryan are averaging 9.1 and 9.0 points, respectively. Last year, NIU went 10-16 overall and 7-9 in MAC play last year. Head coach Carol Hammerle, 15-32 in her second year at the school, is 472-259 in her 27th year as a collegiate head coach.
SCOUTING EMU: Eastern Michigan enters the week's action with an overall record of 11-12, and the Eagles - off until Saturday's game at BG - are 5-7 in MAC action. Last week, the team went 2-1, defeating Ball State Monday (Jan. 31) by an 81-68 count before losing a 74-72 decision at Western Michigan on a buzzer-beater Thursday (Feb. 3). EMU rebounded with the 21-point win over NIU Saturday. Sophomore forward Stephanie Smiley paces the Eagles in a plethora of categories, including scoring (12.1 ppg), rebounding (7.7 rpg), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (1.8 spg). Senior guard Jessica Henry is scoring 11.5 points per game, while sophomore forward Kris Kachaturoff is averaging 10.1 points off the bench. Junior guard Kristy Maska and freshman forward Abby Wiseman are averaging 9.7 and 9.0 points. respectively. A year ago, EMU went 14-13 overall and 8-8 in MAC action. Suzy Merchant, 25-25 in her second year at EMU, is 79-54 in her fifth year as a collegiate head coach.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with 11 of the 12 MAC opponents (BG trails Buffalo, 2-1), and BGSU holds advantages of 8-7 over Northern Illinois and 35-7 vs. Eastern Michigan.
The Falcons are 6-2 in home games vs. NIU, and have won the last three meetings in Anderson Arena, including an 81-66 win last Jan. 2. NIU, however, captured the most recent meeting, 64-61 in DeKalb, last Feb. 23. In that game, NIU's Charbea Haller hit a desperation shot at the buzzer.
The Falcons are 20-2 all-time in home games vs. EMU, and BG has won the last 19 games in Anderson, with Eastern's last road win coming in 1981. The Falcons had a 16-game overall winning streak broken in a big way by the Eagles last Jan. 9, as host EMU hung an 84-53 decision on the Brown and Orange. BG rallied to win the rematch, 98-93 in overtime, at Anderson (Feb. 20, 1999).
LAST WEEK: A cold-shooting night doomed the Falcons to a 69-59 loss at Marshall Wednesday (Feb. 2) ... after Afra Smith scored the opening basket of the game, BGSU never led again ... the Thundering Herd scored the next seven points and opened up a 15-6 lead ... Marshall's biggest lead of the half, 33-23, came at the break ... BG quickly cut the lead to five points, and the Falcons drew within three points on a Dana Western layup with 14 minutes left ... but, the hosts scored 10 of the next 12 points, and BG never got closer than eight points again ... the Falcons shot just .343 from the field, and BGSU made only five three-point shots in 30 attempts ... Smith led the Falcons with 14 points, while Angie Farmer added 13 and Western 10 ... Toni Patillo's game-high 16 points included four treys for the Herd.
NATIONAL LEADERS: The NCAA released the latest women's basketball statistics last Tuesday (Feb. 1), and the Falcons were listed in several categories ... individually, junior Angie Farmer was ranked among the national leaders in three-point field-goals per game ... Farmer was ninth with a 2.9 average ... sophomore Francine Miller was tied for 22nd in the country in three-point percentage, at .459 ... as a team, the Falcons continued to lead the nation in three-pointers made per game, with 9.05, and BG was 12th in free-throw pct. (.753) and 25th in three-point pct. (.370) ... after the Marshall game, Farmer is still averaging 2.9 treys, while Miller's three-point pct. is .430 ... the Falcons are now draining 8.85 triples per game and shooting .748 from the charity stripe and .358 from behind the arc ... the next NCAA stats are scheduled to be released late Tuesday (Feb. 8) or early Wednesday (Feb. 9).
WEARY WAPPES: Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes leads the Falcons with an average of 35.1 minutes played per game ... over the last 13 contests, Wappes has played 489 of the 520 minutes, an average of 37.6 per game ... Wappes has played all 40 minutes four times during that stretch ... during that time, she has dished out 90 assists (6.9 apg) while committing just 52 turnovers ... she also has had 101 points, an average of 7.8 per game.
YOU MAY FIRE WHEN READY, MA'AM: With at least seven games remaining in the 1999-2000 season, the Falcons already have shattered the school seasonal records for three-point shots attempted and made ... last year, BG broke both records by making 135 treys in an even 400 attempts ... those totals smashed the old records of 97 triples made and 296 attempted, set by the 1994-95 squad ... this year, through 20 games, BGSU has attempted 495 treys, making 177 ... that is an average of 8.85 three-pointers made and 24.8 attempted per game ... those numbers project to 239 successful "threes" in 668 attempts over a 27-game schedule.
THEY'RE FIRING AWAY, TOO: Believe it or not, opponents have hoisted a total of 509 shots from behind the arc, an average of 25.5 per game ... BG foes have made 181 treys this year ... the opponents have taken at least 15 three-point shots in all but one game (Kent tried just 13 in the first meeting), and have shot 20 or more treys 13 times ... the foes have taken 41 three-point attempts three times this year.
