Bowling Green, OH - Bowling Green is in sixth place after the opening day of the 2000 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship being held in the Bowling Green State University Student Recreation Center's Cooper Pool. Eastern Michigan leads with 245 points, followed by Miami (227), Toledo (109), Ohio (103), Ball State (100) and BG. Trailing the Falcons are Northern Illinois (77) and Buffalo (77).
The Falcons broke three school records in the first of three-day competition. Junior Andy Jenkins (Oak Harbor, OH) broke his own school record in the 50 free that he set in December with a :20.49 in Thursday's preliminaries. He placed fourth in the Thursday evening final in a time of :20.60.
BG began the meet with a school record time of 1:22.91 in the 200 free relay eclipsing the mark of 1:22.92 set two years ago by Andy Jenkins, Bill Beecher, Matt Johnsen and Kevin Darling. This year's record-breaking relay unit consisted of Andy Jenkins, Tim Early, Matt Johnsen and Aaron Hemminger.
The Falcons closed out the opening night competition with a school record time in the 400 medley relay of 3:22.61 by the team of Tim Early, Matt Johnsen, Kevin Anderson and Andy Jenkins. They broke the previous record (3:23.77) set six years ago by more than a second. The 1993-94 quartet was Chris Lewter, Kevin Grotke, Guenter Miller and Brad Briney.
Competition begins on Friday at noon with preliminaries in the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and three-meter diving. Finals both Friday and Saturday night begin at 7 p.m.
