BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team returns home for the first time in a month-and-a-half span, with a pair of home dual matches this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean, 5-5 in dual play, will open Mid-American Conference action with a Friday (March 24) match against Miami at BGSU's Keefe Courts. The courts are located off of Stadium Drive, behind the BGSU Ice Arena.
Following the Miami match, BGSU will welcome Marshall to town for a Saturday (March 25) contest. Both duals are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
After this weekend's play, the Brown and Orange will return to the road for five matches, not playing again at home until the weekend of April 21-22.
LAST WEEK: The Falcons travelled to Las Vegas, Nev., and dropped two matches. The host school, nationally-ranked UNLV, dealt the Falcons an 8-1 loss Friday (March 17), while Boston College bested the Brown and Orange by a 5-4 count the following day.
Against UNLV, the lone Falcon win came at the second doubles flight, courtesy of senior Deidee Bissinger and junior Meghan Rhodes. For Bissinger, the win was the 143rd total victory of her career. She is now tied with Cindy Mikolajewski (1994-97) for the all-time BGSU record. She passed Mikolajewski to move into sole possession of third place on the doubles list, with 69 career wins. On the singles list, Bissinger's total of 74 career victories is good for fourth place.
In the Boston College match, BGSU received singles wins at the bottom two flights, from sophomore Devon Bissinger and junior Tracy Howitt, respectively. Those two players also combined for a win at the third doubles flight.
The Falcons and Eagles used an ITA experimental scoring system in which, if two singles competitors were even after two sets, the "third set" was comprised of a tiebreaker up to 10.
In doubles play, the top team of juniors Abby Bratton and Erika Wasilewski won, in addition to the aforementioned third-flight duo.
