BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green women's tennis team broke a 23-match losing streak vs. Miami, defeating the RedHawks by a 5-2 result Friday afternoon. The match was held at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
The Falcons (6-5 overall, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) received a pair of wins from senior co-captain Deidee Bissinger. She recorded a straight-sets win over MU's Erica Echko at the fourth singles flight, and teamed with junior Meghan Rhodes for an 8-5 win at the second doubles flight. In the process, Bissinger became the winningest player in BGSU women's tennis history. With Friday's two victories, she now has 145 combined career wins to move past Cindy Mikolajewski (1994-97) on the school's list.
Bissinger now has 75 career singles victories, good for a second-place tie on that career list. She is deadlocked with Mikolajewski and Carla Marshak (1989-92), just four wins behind all-time leader Julie Weisblatt (1994-97).
On the doubles list, Deidee Bissinger is fourth with 70 career wins.
BGSU's other singles victories vs. Miami came from Rhodes at the second flight, junior Erika Wasilewski at the third level, and sophomore Devon Bissinger at the fifth flight.
The Falcons had captured the doubles point prior to the singles play, as the top-flight team of Wasilewski and junior Abby Bratton was victorious, in addition to the Rhodes/Deidee Bissinger duo.
The win over Miami was just the second for the Falcons in 25 series meetings. BGSU had not downed the Redskins/RedHawks since the 1974-75 season.
Miami dropped to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in MAC play with the loss at BG. Since MAC play begin in 1980-81, MU has now lost only eight conference regular-season dual matches. The RedHawks were picked to finish third in the league by the MAC's head coaches in the 1999-2000 preseason poll, while the Falcons were tabbed to place sixth.
BGSU is in action again on Saturday (March 25), taking on Marshall in a 1:00 p.m. match at Keefe Courts. Marshall was picked to place second in the MAC in the preseason poll. The Marshall contest marks BG's final home match until April 21.
