BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - UP NEXT: The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team, after completing the road portion of the Mid-American Conference schedule last week, winds up the regular season with a pair of home matches this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean, 9-8 in dual play and 4-3 in MAC action, will host Eastern Michigan in a Friday (April 21) contest before welcoming arch-rival Toledo to town the following day (April 22). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
The Keefe Courts complex is located off Stadium Drive, directly behind the BGSU Ice Arena, on the Bowling Green campus.
Next weekend, the Falcons head to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the MAC Championships (April 27-29).
LAST WEEK: Host Northern Illinois captured the doubles point, and split the singles matches, en route to a 4-3 victory over the Falcons Friday (April 14). The Huskies won all three doubles matches, and the visiting Falcons could capture just three of the six singles flights. Junior Meghan Rhodes won a convincing 6-1, 6-2 decision over NIU's Kim Donsbach at the second flight, and sophomore Devon Bissinger and junior Tracy Howitt won at the fifth and sixth levels, respectively. Howitt won in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
In doubles, the top BGSU team of juniors Abby Bratton and Erika Wasilewski lost in a tiebreaker, while BG's other two teams (Rhodes and senior Deidee Bissinger, Devon Bissinger and Howitt) both lost by 8-6 scores.
Western Michigan won five of the six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over the Falcons Saturday (April 15). The Broncos captured wins at the top three singles flights, but Bratton and Rhodes provided solid resistance at the top two levels. Bratton lost a three-set match to WMU's Larissa Chinwah at the top flight, while Rhodes extended the Broncos' Cyra Malik to a third set before succumbing.
Deidee Bissinger provided the lone win for the Falcons, downing Melanie Remynse in straight sets at the fourth flight. The win was the 148th of Bissinger's career, extending her school-record total of combined victories. She now has 76 singles wins, just three shy of deadlocking Julie Weisblatt (1994-97) for the school record in that career category.
