BGSU Baseball Signs Three To National Letter Of Intent

Bowling Green State University Head Baseball Coach Danny Schmitz announced today the signing of three student-athletes to national letters of intent during the late signing period bringing the total members of the class of 2004 to six. David Barkholz (Waterford, MI/Detroit Country Day), Nate Henschen (Bowling Green, OH) and Keith Laughlin (New Riegel, OH) join early signees Andrew Hudak (Toledo, OH/Start), Zach King (Bloomdale, OH/Elmwood) and Kyle Knoblauch (Blissfield, MI/Blissfield). All six will be begin their studies at BGSU in the fall of 2000.
David Barkholz, a 5-11, 165-pound left-handed pitcher, is currently a senior at Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, Michigan. He has also batted leadoff as an outfielder on his summer team (Michigan Bulls).
Nate Henschen, a 5-11, 175-pound infielder, is currently batting .394 for the BGHS Bobcats with a slugging percentage of 1.091. Twelve of his 13 hits have been for extra bases including five home runs. He has also compiled a 2-1 pitching record with a 2.47 earned-run average. Henschen has also been credited with two saves as he has struck out 35 batters in 22.2 innings, while walking four.
Keith Laughlin, a 6-2, 175-pound left-handed pitcher, compiled an 8-3 mark in 1999 at New Riegel High School with a 1.41 earned-run average in 69.1 innings. Last summer he played for the Pemberville American Legion squad where he had an 11-1 record and 110 strikeouts in 94 innings. Laughlin had a 2.10 earned-run average with seven complete games. He was named New Riegel's Most Valuable Pitcher in both 1998 and 1999, while earning First Team Midland Athletic League and District 9 honors in 1999.
The BGSU Baseball team has captured the last two Mid-American Conference East Division titles and MAC tournament titles, while also participating in the NCAA tournament in both 1998 and 1999. The Falcons have eight seniors on the 2000 squad including catchers Matt Marcum and Brad Simon, along with pitchers Joe Cheney, Mike Muzi and Ryan Streb. Also in their final season are infielder/outfielder Matt Best, designated hitter Alan Gilhousen and infielder Kenny Burdine.
After starting the season 0-5-1, Bowling Green has compiled an 20-8 mark in the last 28 games including a 9-1 record in Mid-American Conference contests. The Falcons visit Miami for a doubleheader on Saturday before returning home to host the RedHawks for a twinbill on Sunday.
