BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green women's tennis team concluded the regular season with a 5-2 win over arch-rival Toledo Saturday (April 22). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
With the win, the Falcons end the regular season with an overall record of 11-8, and BGSU completes the MAC slate with a dual mark of 6-3.
BGSU's win, coupled with Marshall's Saturday win over Miami, gives the Falcons the #3 seed for the MAC Championships. The Brown and Orange, picked to finish sixth by the league coaches in the preseason poll, tied for third with Miami and Eastern Michigan, but earn the third seed by virtue of regular-season victories over both the RedHawks and Eagles.
BGSU won the doubles point, with the #2 team of junior Meghan Rhodes and senior Deidee Bissinger recording an 8-2 win over UT's Natasa Gligoric and Marivi Cuartin. The third-flight tandem of seniors Kelly Dredge and Beth Wilson recorded an 8-6 win over their Rocket foes.
In singles action, the Brown and Orange won at the bottom four flights. For the second consecutive day, Rhodes did not lose a game in her third-flight victory. Rhodes rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sarah Rothenberg.
The Bissinger sisters lost four games apiece en route to their wins. Deidee Bissinger won at the fourth flight, while sophomore Devon Bissinger was victorious at the fifth level.
At the sixth singles flight, junior Tracy Howitt won in the minimum two sets to move her team-best singles record to 21-9 on the season.
For Deidee Bissinger, Saturday's two wins increased her school-record total to 152 combined career victories. Her singles win was the 78th of her career, just one shy of the school record held by Julie Weisblatt (1994-97).
Toledo drops to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in MAC play.
The Falcons will begin play in the MAC Championships with a Friday (April 28) match against sixth-seeded Ball State. BGSU will take on the Cardinals in a 1:00 p.m. match in Kalamazoo, Mich. The tournament, hosted by Western Michigan, begins on Thursday (April 27) and runs through Sunday (April 30).
